Mary Henderson Obituary

Mary Frances Grooms was born December 24, 1935 to Frank L. Grooms and Carrie Grooms. Mary was the third child out of eight siblings. Mary entered her eternal rest on December 26, 2018 at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. She was known to her family as "Mary Frances." On March 21, 1962, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Steve Henderson Jr. This union was blessed with two children, Edythe Faith Henderson and Maria Ann Henderson.

Mary obtained her formal education through the public-school system in Louisa County, Virginia. She continued her education by attending Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA. She worked for over 30 years in the District and Federal government.  During her extensive tenure in the government, she was able to help several family members and friends to become gainfully employed. After retirement, Mary pursued her entrepreneurship by running a small cleaning company in the federal and private sector.

Early in life Mary professed her faith in Christ, she was a kind, giving and a loving mother.  In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, shopping, traveling and getting her hair and nails done.  Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, friends and watching her favorite game show, Family Feud. She was devoted to attending Mount Jezreel Baptist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland until her health no longer permitted.

Mary was proceeded in death by her parents, one brother Shelton Grooms and three sisters; Windell Hackney, Hannah Grooms, Lucy Epps and three brothers-in-law. She leaves behind one sister Julia B. Thurston, two brothers Frank L. Grooms Jr. (Rickie Grooms, sister-in-law) and Carl E. Grooms (Millie Grooms, sister-in-law). Memories of her will also be cherished by Uncle Lloyd Burruss, Aunt Marie Christmas, Godson Jeremiah Dupree Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many other loving relatives and friends.  She will truly be missed by her loving, caring and fury friend Xuxa P. Henderson, “The Cat.”
