Muriel Diana Telford

Muriel Diana Telford departed this life on Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at age 93. Born on July 21, 1926, Muriel was the daughter of Arthur and Mary Butts (deceased), wife of Woodrow Telford (deceased), mother of Lynette Telford, Frank Telford (Esmie), Judith James (deceased), Cherryl Blair (Simba Mwanza),  Desiree Oginga (Kwesi) and Bertie Telford (deceased). 

Muriel began her teaching career at age 16 as a pupil teacher.  She obtained her Training Teacher Certification advancing to the level of Assistant Headmistress. She taught in various schools on the East Coast Demerara, St. Augustine’s Anglican School, Friendship Village; St. Lucian’s Anglican School, Wakapoa, Pomeroon; Paradise Government School, Paradise; and St. Andrew’s Anglican School, Cove and John. After teaching for 33⅓ years she retired, and in 1980 she migrated from Guyana, South America to the United States of America, and worked as a clerk, then again as a teacher and a nursing assistant.

She leaves to mourn her children, grandchildren Haidee Elvis, Deirdre Elvis-Peterson (Michael), Sherryl Rosario, Tehron Elvis (Felicia), Norris Oginga, Ansen Elvis (Elsabeth), Effua Oginga McGougain (Doc), Kashka Mwanza (Stephanie), Mosa Telford, Tatu Largie (Shalton), Zola Telford, Tia Telford, Uso Telford, Candys Suika, and Faith Suika; great grandchildren Kyle Leacock, Keenan Oginga, Jordan Oginga, Kashaun Mwanza, Nathanael Elvis, Melik Oginga, Rhoman Elvis, Eva Peterson, Luc Peterson, Nyla Elvis, Ayanna Largie, Kyan Oginga, Alynia Elvis, Sydney Rosario, Raee Elvis, Carina Peterson, Zuriel Elvis, Tahir McGougain, Elijah Largie, Kinaya McPherson, Xena Peterson, Gabrielle Elvis, Mapenzi McPherson, Israel Largie, Aiyana Mwanza, Lars Peterson, Kamryn Oginga, Kwame Mwanza and Okhi; sisters Olive Answick and Norma Peters (Pat), brother Arthur Butts, nieces and nephews  Brenda Johnson, Keith, Lennox (Claudette), Linden (Sandrene), and Ian Herod; Jennifer McPherson (Philip), Hazel and Andre Answick, Barbara and Clarence Ogle, Collin Peters, Faith Butts-Smith, Adrian Rump, Avery, Dacia, Judeau, George, Arthur, Gary, Sharon and Shondell Butts, and many friends.

A Celebration of Muriel’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, 15575 Germantown Road, Germantown, MD 20874, followed by burial at Gates of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Gerogia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20906. A repast will be held at St.  Nicholas Episcopal after the burial.
