Alfred Decharms Shaw, Jr., affectionately known as Alfie, passed away on March 30, 2026, in Germantown, Maryland, at the age of 57. Born on June 18, 1968, in Neptune, New Jersey, he lived a life marked by warmth, kindness, and a steady desire to lift others up. He was a man who understood that a meaningful life is not measured only by years, but by the love we give, the joy we share, and the encouragement we leave behind in the hearts of others.

Alfie was the beloved son of the late Ruth I Shaw, and the late Alfred D. Shaw Sr. He was a devoted brother to Lynne K. Spinks, Jill A. Lewis and her husband Joe Lewis, and the late Judith L. Cottrell. He also held a special place in the lives of his nephews John Spinks Jr., Jerel Spinks, and David Cottrell IV, his niece Victoria Spinks, and his great-nieces and great nephews, all of whom were blessed by his presence, his laughter, and his steady love, Arnel Booth a friend for many years, like a brother to him. He shared a longtime partnership with Mary L. Jordan, and together they built a bond rooted in care, companionship, and mutual devotion.

Those who knew Alfie will remember a man who made it his mission to make people happy. He had a generous spirit and a genuine way of connecting with others making them feel seen, valued, and welcomed. His life was a reminder that kindness is never wasted. Every smile he inspired, every moment of comfort he offered, and every bit of joy he brought into a room became part of the legacy he leaves behind. He lived with the quiet strength of someone who understood that small acts of love can create lasting impact.

Alfie dedicated part of his professional life to serving others as a dietetic technician at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, New Jersey. In that role, he contributed to the well-being of patients and supported the important work of helping others heal and thrive. His work reflected the same compassion that guided his personal life. He approached responsibilities with care and purpose, and carried himself with the dignity of someone who knew that service to others is one of the highest callings.

Outside of work, Alfie found joy in simple but meaningful pleasures. He loved playing games, walking, exercising, and he embraced the value of staying active and engaged. He also treasured spending time with his beloved miniature Doberman, Bella, who brought him companionship and comfort.

Alfie’s life speaks to the power of presence.  He did not need grand gestures to make an impression. He showed up with heart. He listened. He encouraged. He cared. In a world that can sometimes feel hurried and heavy, he offered the strength of kindness, and the example of a life lived with intentions. His memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his spirit will live on in the stories, smiles, and cherished moments he created.

As Maya Angelou wisely said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Alfie made people feel loved, appreciated and uplifted. That is a legacy of true greatness. Though he is no longer physically present, the light he brought into the world remains. His family and all who loved him will carry forward his memory with gratitude, and they will remember him not only for the life he lived, but for the love he gave so freely.
