Austin Phaire, Jr Obituary

Austin Stanley Phaire, Jr was born on January 27, 1950 at 9:19 am in Mount Vernon, New York to the late Elizabeth Harriett Thompson Phaire and the late Austin Stanley Phaire, Sr. Austin’s half-sister Jeannette Osborne also preceded him in death.

Austin graduated from New Rochelle High School, NY in June 1969. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy on June 17, 1975. He began Basic Training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois in 1970, and in 1972 began serving on the USS Guadalcanal ship as a data processing technician. He later attended Pace University in Westchester, NY and Potomac College in Washington, DC, majoring in Computer Science & Information Management and earning a BS degree in Information Systems & Accounting.

Austin worked at IBM Corporation for over 15 years in the information technology field. Upon retiring from IBM, he continued a full-time career as systems analyst at a few other tech firms in the DMV area. In 2003, he joined the Maryland Judiciary and dedicated 22 years to working within Judicial Information Systems (JIS), a division of Administrative Office of Courts (AOC). Over the past decade, he played a crucial role in overseeing the development and implementation of Enterprise Custom Reports (ECRs). This initiative was part of the launch of the new Maryland Electronic Courts (MDEC) system. Under Austin’s leadership, the team successfully created more than 600 ECRs, which are now used daily by courts across the judiciary.

Throughout his life, Austin enjoyed playing tennis and attending U.S. Open Matches with his friends. When the physical rigors of tennis became too great, he learned to play golf and embraced golf as another passion. Austin would often watch aviation shows, play simulation games about planes, and went to see the Blue Angels every year. In 2022 he started to live out his dream and learned how to fly. He took private flying lessons from an FAA approved program at Gleim Aviation, completing ground school and 20 hours of dual flight lessons with an instructor for takeoffs, flights, and landings. He loved learning to fly and going up in the air with his instructor.

Austin enjoyed many other hobbies throughout his life, including photography, fishing, hiking, swimming, playing cards, and traveling. He had a mind designed for puzzles and brain games, which he loved to do in his free time. He adored his family and created countless memories with them enjoying delicious meals, watching funny movies or just taking casual walks in nature. He loved the outdoors and was never afraid to try anything that could be adventurous.

Austin leaves to cherish his memory: his wife Dorothy of 38 years, his daughters Amber and Mia, stepdaughter Danielle Walton (Sean Prather), granddaughter Elle Prather; nephew Vincent Osborne (Meg) of Granby, Colorado, niece Charlene Gramling (Timothy) of Woodland Hills, CA, cousin Shawn Mannix of Atlanta, GA, cousin Myrna Phaire of Bronx, NY; father-in-law Paul Herring, mother-in-law Sylvia Herring, sister-in-law Lori Herring, brothers-in-law David Herring and Paul J. Herring and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
