Barbara Genies Obituary

Barbara Ann Genies (affectionately known as “Tootie”) departed this life on Sunday, October 3, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Charles L. Genies, Sr., and Evelyn A. Genies. Barbara was born on October 23, 1950, in Montgomery County, Maryland and raised in Seneca, MD. She attended Montgomery County Public Schools and graduated from Gaithersburg High School. As a young adult, she worked as a Teacher’s Aide at Brown Station Elementary School in Gaithersburg, MD, helping with the learning-disabled students. She was the mother of three kids, Linette Harrison, Damita Imes and Harry Twyman.

Barbara loved sports, especially football. She was a die-hard Redskins (now The Washington Football Team) fan and way, way back in the day, she met Sonny Jergensen and several of the other players in person. She knew football so well, she could have been given a black/white striped shirt, whistle and flag and sent out on the field to referee the game. Barbara was outgoing, she loved dancing, going places and having a good time. Although she never had a car or learned how to drive, she could often be found at the same place you were going and would sometimes beat you getting there. She loved being around family, friends, and people in general. After meeting you for the first time, you were no longer a stranger to her. Barbara would do things to make you happy and give you her last. She had a very generous spirit, but she didn’t take no stuff from anyone. She would let you know what was on her mind if necessary.

Barbara accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior as a young adult, and she was not ashamed to praise God or let you know that she was saved. As she got older, she experienced numerous health challenges and in October 2012, she went to reside at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Mt. Airy, MD, up until her passing on October 3, 2021.

In 2020, when so many of the residents and staff at Pleasant View Nursing Home became infected with the Coronavirus and many of them died as a result of the virus, approximately 18 residents were not affected by the virus and Barbara was one of those that was not affected. Look at God!

Barbara was a fighter, and she didn’t give up, God chose to give her rest. She passed away 20 days before her 71st birthday. We thank God that he allowed her to live three score and ten years. To God be all the glory, for the things he has done. Although Barbara is absent from our presence, she is forever in our hearts.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father, Charles L. Genies, Sr., Great-granddaughter, Damiya Butler, Brother, Washington L. Genies, Sister, Evelyn A. Genies-Davis, Nephew, Billie J.
