Barbara Adams Ramos was born on February 9, 1926 to Dr. Frederic Kit Adams, Sr. and Audrey Adams in Washington, DC. Barbara attended Banneker Junior High School and Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School. Barbara was an excellent student and upon graduating from high school, she attended Iowa State and graduated from Howard University. After graduating Barbara entered her chosen profession of teaching. After many years of service with the District of Columbia Public School System, she retired as the Vice Superintendent of the Home Economics Department. Barbara loved fashion and became a valued sales associate at Neiman Marcus where she also retired.
Barbara was married to the late Edward Ramos for nearly 40 years. Barbara and Ed were wonderful parents to Barbara’s only child Lisa.
Barbara was a faithful member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Washington, DC. She was also an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for more than 65 years, achieving Pearl status, the Alpha Wives Organization, Eltitonn Social Club, the Six of Hearts Bridge Club and numerous other social and service organizations.
Barbara was stylish, loyal and extremely charitable. In addition to her beloved sorority’s Pearl and Ivy Educational Foundation, Barbara supported various organizations and causes such as the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Arena Stage, the Parkinson’s Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Foundation, the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Saint Augustine’s University.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Edward Ramos and her brother Thurman Dandridge.
Barbara leaves to cherish her legacy, her devoted daughter, Lisa Anne Bourne; brother, Dr. Frederick Kit Adams, Jr. (Adele); niece, Dr. Terri Adams-Fuller; great-niece Maya Fuller and a host of other family members and dear friends who will truly miss her.
