Calvin C. LaRoche, 79, a distinguished business leader, philanthropist, and mentor, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025, at Suburban Hospital, surrounded by his family. Known for his leadership in the corporate and nonprofit sectors, Cal left an indelible mark on countless organizations and individuals.
Born in the Bronx, New York on January 28, 1946, Cal earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Central State University in Ohio where he became a lifelong member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, Eta Gamma Chapter.
Cal began his career as a cryptanalyst for the National Security Agency. Later, he began his professional journey with IBM, serving 24 years in various leadership positions. He directed an information systems sales and marketing team of 1,200 professionals. He was a Director of Strategic Development for IBM at the company’s headquarters in Armonk, New York and later played a pivotal role in founding the IBM Consulting Group. He also completed advanced studies at IBM’s Advanced Business Institute. His career spanned over 35 years.
After IBM, Cal joined SkyTel Communications as CEO and President of its international operations. Under his leadership, the company expanded its wireless messaging services globally. He later served as Chief Operating Officer at The Orkand Corporation, overseeing its federal IT services and successfully managing its acquisition by Harris Corporation.
In addition to his corporate achievements, Cal co-founded DC Ventures and Associates, LLC, investing in early-stage technology companies and advising senior executives on growth strategies. His expertise extended to nonprofit governance as well. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and was Trustee Emeritus for Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD, and Norwood School. Cal served on the Advisory Board of the Ron Brown Scholar Program. In 2020, Cal became the first President of the Beta Mu Foundation, building its structure and securing funding. Under his leadership, the Foundation awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to 6 Black collegiate men. He served as Board President until March 2025, leaving a lasting legacy. Cal was also a founding board member and Treasurer of Patients For Affordable Drugs since 2016, and his leadership helped win passage of landmark legislation allowing Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices for millions of Americans.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Esperanza LaRoche; and his five children: Gina LaRoche (Alan Price), Renee LaRoche Morris (Ralston Morris), Danielle Janifer LaRoche, Calvin “CJ” LaRoche, and Ethan LaRoche. He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Jackson and Griffin Price; Grace and James Morris; and Jade and Miles King.
In addition to his wife and children, Cal is survived by his mother, Lucille “Gloria” David; his former wife, Cheryl Janifer LaRoche; and his siblings: Enrique LaRoche, Anita LaRoche, Carmen LaRoche, Carlos LaRoche, Claudia LaRoche, Andre LaRoche, and Alec LaRoche.
Cal was an avid golfer and Member at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm and the DC Pro-Duffers Golf Club where he served as Chapter VP, President and Foundation Scholarship Chairman.
A private celebration of Cal’s life will be held at a later date.
