Claude Antonio Mayberry, III, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away in Silver Spring, Maryland on September 16, 2024. Born in Gary, Indiana on March 16, 1958, to Dr. Claude A. Mayberry, Jr. and Pauline A. (Lampkin) Mayberry, he spent most of his years in Gary, Indiana, living a brief time during his childhood years in Philadelphia, PA and New York City, NY. Claude eventually settled in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 2010, where he spent the last 14 years of his life.
Nicknamed “Tyke” at an early age for his diminutive size, he grew into a tall, handsome man, standing more than 6 feet tall as an adult. A passionate sports enthusiast, Claude’s love for sports was well known. It was basketball, however, that was his first love. He was a talented player, whose skills on the court were admired by many, and he was a loyal fan of the Chicago Bulls. His enthusiasm for basketball was infectious, whether he was playing, watching, or discussing his favorite teams. He would often reminisce about pick-up games that he and his sister, Cheryl, would win against unsuspecting foes. After moving to the suburbs of Washington, DC, he also became a fan of the Baltimore Ravens.
Beyond his love for sports, Claude was known for his great memory, loving spirit, kindness, and a sense of humor, always able to bring laughter to those around him. To hear his laugh was magical. His joyful spirit and quick wit left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Claude loved music and would listen to it often. His favorite musicians included Parliament and George Clinton, who he enjoyed seeing in concert in Philadelphia. He also enjoyed R&B and old school hip-hop. If you wanted to see his great smile, a meal consisting of a cheesesteak, Chinese food or White Castle cheeseburgers did the trick.
For more than a decade, Claude was a dedicated employee at Giant Foods in Silver Spring. His strong work ethic, friendly nature, and commitment to his job earned him the respect and appreciation of his colleagues and customers.
Claude was preceded in death by his loving parents Dr. Claude A. Mayberry, Jr. and Pauline (Lampkin) Mayberry and his sister Karen Mayberry. He is survived by his three loving siblings, with whom he shared a close bond: Lawrence Mayberry (Luisa, Deceased), Cheryl Mayberry Bradley (Michael), and Eric Mayberry (Vikki). Nine nieces and nephews also survive him: Ayana, Michael, Amber, Matthew Fennell, Luis, Erika, Lauren, J. Malik, and Alyssa; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Gone too soon, Claude will be remembered for his kind heart, love of family, sense of contentment, and zest for life. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. RIP, Tyke!
