Conchita Poole Obituary

Conchita Marlow Poole was born on November 7, 1944, to Clifford Marlow and Anne Armstrong. Her drive and determination were evident at an early age. Conchita graduated from McKinley Tech High School and what is now the University of the District of Colombia. She retired after a long career at the U.S. Department of Labor, where she discovered her passion for helping others reach their personal goals. Conchita's 'retirement' was uniquely her own: she continued to work as a contractor for the Labor Department's inter national programs, established herself a as Realtor specializing in a rapidly transforming Washington, DC, and studied jewelry design.

Conchita loved adventure and meeting new people. She boasted connections across ages, backgrounds, lifestyles and neighborhoods, rarely leaving an event or occasion without gaining a new friend. Her energy and her creativity were her hallmarks. Whether through renovations, interior design, jewelry-making, knitting, hand-dancing, or her personal style, Conchita was most al home ex pressing herself. Key inspirations were her travels, which took her to China, Cambodia, South Africa, France, Alaska, and the Caribbean, among others.

Throughout her life, Conchita helped countless individuals. Whether it was one-time assistance to a young mother, providing rides lo the elderly, or helping a student study abroad, she was generous with her money, time and connections. A particular passion was helping young people-especially those with limited career or educational guidance-and connecting them with resources and people who could assist them in reaching their dreams. Later in life, she became an avid supporter of the Black Student Fund, which has recently established the Conchita Poole Math Circle in her honor.

Her husband Terence (Terry) Poole, who she first met in grade school, was the love of Conchita's life. She is survived by him, her sisters, a son, her, her beloved granddaughters, treasured uncles and aunts, a host of cherished cousins, and close, dear and lifelong friends too numerous to name. Conchita was one of a kind, and we were all blessed to have her.
