Daniel Pernell Obituary

On October 8, 2025, Daniel M. Pernell departed this world after a courageous fight after longtime illnesses.  His parents Dorothy and Daniel Pernell II, Delores Billings and Rudolph preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory his brothers and sisters, Michael Purnell of Marshall Longview Texas, Mildred Pernell of Garden City Georgia, and Gladys Brown, Russell Pernell, Bobby Jenny Kinard, Randolph Pernell and Christopher Pernell all of Tacoma Washington; brothers-in-law Al Kinard, Clarence Ramsey, Eddie Billings and Latarian Brown; nieces and nephews all of Tacoma Washington; sisters-in-law Louise Jones of Jackson Mississippi, Sandra Purnell of Longview Texas and Karen Pernell of Tacoma Washington ; adopted son Wesley Jeter; special friends Courtney Williams, Mary Mitchell,  Reverend Harris Thomas, Denise Jackson, Kevin Jayson; cousin Vivion Williams and a host of other relatives and friends.

After graduation he relocated to Washington DC over 50 years ago.  He worked in various job such working with Corcoran Art Gallery and manager at McDonalds before getting a job at the Library of Congress in copyright division.  As an employee he was very active in the agency’s Federal Capital Campaigns and Blacks in Government.

 In 1998 he retired from the Library of Congress after 22 years of service.  He is a highly respected and well recognized community activist   He was elected as ANC Commissioner in the Near Northeast Community. His job was to be the advocate for his community to the DC government for dealing with street, seniors, youth, zoning transportation and other concerns. He also volunteers to work on the Council community finance, public safety advisory and emergency preparedness committee.

After a stroke he retired but continued his community activism by working on issues such as AIDS, Aging, youth, veterans and crime prevention efforts in his community.

A few of his accomplishments include H Street Appreciation Award, Near NE Citizens again Crime and Drug Award, community service awards from JO Wilson Elementary, Metropolitan Police (MPD) Fifth District, Eleaner Holmes Norton Environment and Human Rights, etc.  In 1991 he was one of the representatives to escort President Elect Bill /Clinton through the Georgia Avenue corridor. He has received the Council of the District of Columbia award for his outstanding volunteer services.

Through the organization that he established Contact and Community Outreach (CCOR) he provided information and assistance to residents on a variety of issues.     He was certified HIV/’aids counselor, former chair of Max Robinson Community Advisory Board and former computer to the Nations Children Museum.  Through the Family Church of DC American Clergy Leadership Conference group, he was able to travel internationally for peace to places like South Korea and Israel.

Some of proudest accomplishments were in helping Eleanor Holmes and Charlene Drew Jarvis to be elected to office and working with H Street Community Development and MPD on crime prevention initiatives in his community.

He truly believes to serve is an honor
