Darryl Riley Sr. Obituary

Darryl Nelson Riley Sr. ascended to be with his Lord and Savior on June 30, 2021 after battling multiple forms of cancer. He was 62 years old.

Darryl was born on March 15, 1959 in Newburgh, New York to Lawrence and Muriel Riley and was the eldest of their three sons. From early on, he was a talented sportsman and loved fashion. After graduating from Bowie State University in 1984 where he was a three sport athlete, Darryl began working in Maryland, Virginia, and DC public and private schools as a physical education instructor and coach. He also served in the DC National Guard as a medical specialist.

Over the course of several decades, Darryl coached and mentored athletes ranging from elementary age to adults. He closed out his coaching career as the head coach of the Montgomery County Knights football team in 2012, where he took great pride in giving young men something positive to be a part of. In the years preceding his death, Darryl also took pride in being an operator for the Montgomery County Ride On Bus Service. He remained passionate about the game of football and was a devoted Washington Redskins fan.

Darryl found tremendous joy in relaying knowledge and wisdom to others, whether they asked for it or not! Aside from sports and other topics, he was especially vocal about his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, the author of his life’s story. Darryl was an active member of Church of the Redeemer for over 30 years where he served in several ministries. Until the very end, Darryl believed that God would perform a miracle in his life, healing both his body and his mind. The Lord heard his prayers and perfected his faith after years of struggle.

He is survived by his children, Lauryn Riley Carr and Darryl Riley Jr.; his mother, Muriel Riley; his brothers, Jeffrey Riley and William Riley; his grandchildren, Khalil Riley, Aaliyah Carr, and Amira Carr; and a host of other beloved family and friends. Darryl was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Riley Jr.
