Diane Elizabeth Simmons Obituary

The family of Diane Elizabeth Simmons, of Laurel, Maryland, is deeply saddened to announce her passing on May 1, 2026.

Diane was born on February 20, 1946, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She lived a life marked by creativity, generosity, and a deep devotion to others. Throughout her life, Diane carried with her the values of compassion, faith, and perseverance, sharing those gifts freely with everyone she encountered.

Diane studied Fine Art and Art Education at Arizona State University, where she cultivated the artistic foundation that would shape her life’s work. She later pursued studies in psychology at the University of Oregon, with the goal of working in art therapy for children. Her education reflected not only a love of learning but also her commitment to helping others heal and grow through creativity.

A highly regarded artist, Diane specialized in palette knife oil painting. She was known for her vibrant use of color and her ability to create depth and texture using only a palette knife. Her work, admired for its beauty and expressive quality, is held in private collections across the United States and Canada. Through her art, Diane leaves behind a lasting legacy of color, emotion, and inspiration.

In addition to her artistic achievements, Diane was a devoted teacher. She shared her passion for art through group and private classes in Arizona, Oregon, Maryland, and West Virginia. A patient and encouraging instructor, she inspired students of all ages to explore their creativity and find confidence in self-expression. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, leaving a meaningful impact on all who learned from her.

Diane is survived by her daughter, Andrea Buecker; her son-in-law, Michael Buecker; her granddaughter, Makayla Buecker; her grandson, Ryan Buecker; her sisters, Margaret, Melia, and Linda; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and students who loved her dearly. Her family was the center of her life, and she cherished every moment spent with them. She will be welcomed into the loving arms of her parents, Robert and Leta Simmons and her loyal pup, Remi, her constant companion.

Outside of her work, Diane found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved spending time with family and friends, playing games and cards—especially cribbage, Scrabble, Uno, Five Crowns, and Flinch. She also enjoyed going to the movies, listening to music, baking, and visiting scenic places that often inspired her artwork.

Those who knew Diane will remember her as loving, generous, and creative. She lived with grace, purpose, and an open heart, leaving an enduring impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was a beautiful expression of art, faith, family, and service, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for June, and details will be shared with family and friends once finalized.
