Donald McClure Sr. Obituary

Donald Lee McClure Sr. Esq.

Donald Lee McClure Sr., born on May 17th, 1940, in Charlotte, N.C., passed away on January 21st, 2024. He was the son of Thomas and Thomasina, the youngest among six siblings – Thomas, Charles, Edwin, Nannie, and Versie.

As a young man, Donald developed a passion for football and held various jobs, including being a newspaper delivery boy, A&P Store Clerk, and working at the college grill. His early nicknames, "teenie" and "snag," reflected his small size at birth and a missing tooth.

Donald attended West Charlotte High School and North Carolina A&T State University, where he earned a BS and MS in Engineering. Later, he obtained a Juris Doctorate in Law from George Washington University.

He married Gloria Yongue, and together they had three boys, Donald Jr., Duane, and Andre. Donald Sr. enjoyed exploring the world, creating cherished memories with family during vacations in the Bahamas, Jamaica, Hawaii, Acapulco, Virgin Islands, Spain, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico.

A man of diverse interests, Donald loved the music of Isaac Hayes and Marvin Gaye, had a penchant for cars like the Cadillac DeVille, Lincoln Continental, and Ford Explorer, and maintained a timeless style with classic wingtip shoes.

Sports were an integral part of his life, and he passionately followed the Redskins, LeBron James, and Muhammad Ali. Family time was filled with sports activities like basketball, table tennis, tennis, skiing, golf, and biking.

Donald's illustrious career included roles at NASA, FCC, DOD, Department of Navy, McClure Technology, and Bailey McClure & Williams Law Firm. He served in various volunteer civic offices, such as National President of Tots & Teens, Army 1st Lieutenant, Chairman of Montgomery Square Civic Association, Elder, Trustee & Deacon at Northminster Presbyterian Church, President of Phi Beta Sigma Montgomery County Chapter, Black Lawyers Student Association, President, Board Member at Prevention of Blindness Society and General Counsel of North Carolina A&T Alumni Chapter.

His memberships included Romeos, Pan Hellenic Council, Black Lawyers Student Association, Pigskins of Washington and A&T 1962 Alumni Association. Donald's greatest pride and joy were his seven grandchildren – Kayla, Alayna, Troi, Landon, Kenton, William, Nathaniel – and three great-grandchildren – Kingston, Cannon, and Kyrie.

Donald Lee McClure Sr. will be remembered for his infectious laugh, never shy of talking to strangers, contributions as one of the first African Americans in multiple of his Government Positions, passion for life, and the lasting impact he made on his family, friends, and community.
