Edwina Juanita "Ency" Lee Womack, a beloved member of her community and cherished by all who knew her, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026, in Silver Spring, Maryland. Born on September 5, 1949, in Washington, DC, Ency graced this world with 76 years of love, laughter, and unwavering spirit.
Edwina began her professional journey immediately upon graduating from high school, dedicating herself to serving her country by working at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory (NOL). She continued her service there until her retirement in 1997. Her compassionate nature and commitment to helping others later led her to the Caroline Center, where she joined in 1998 as a Nursing Service Program Coordinator Assistant, making a significant impact on those she served.
Her creative talents were expressed beautifully through her love of floral arrangements and her passion for music. Right out of high school in 1968, Edwina sang with her cousins in a group called The Laymenettes. Her melodic voice was a source of joy and entertainment across the DMV area, performing with the band at parades, parties, and special events for many years.
A devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Edwina celebrated an inspiring 45 years of sobriety on February 17, 2026. Her journey and dedication to the program touched and inspired countless lives.
Outside of her professional and musical endeavors, Edwina found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved visiting the casino, where she could be found enjoying the excitement and camaraderie.
She is lovingly remembered by her sister, Romaine Barber, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom were touched by her kindness and warmth. Edwina is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Lee and Mary (Lee) Awkard; her sister, Beverly Gray; her brothers, Larry Lee and Perry Lee; and her husband, General Womack.
A celebration of Edwina's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, April 11, at 12 pm at Resurrection Baptist Church, located at 900 Ednor Road., Silver Spring, MD 20905. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance and honor of a woman whose light shone brightly in our lives.
