Ella Maye (Montgomery) Wright
February 25, 1935 – December 7, 2024
Ella Maye (Montgomery) Wright, a trailblazer, devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and mentor, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2024, at the age of 89. Her remarkable life, shaped by resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to others, leaves an indelible legacy of love, service, and strength.
Born on February 25, 1935, in St. Petersburg, Florida, Ella was the third of six children to the late Rosa M. and Samuel E. Montgomery. She grew up in a close-knit family alongside her older brothers, Isiah T. Montgomery and Samuel E. Montgomery Jr., and later welcomed her younger siblings, Lillie Maye Montgomery, Raymond Montgomery, and Annie M. Montgomery.
Ella's journey was marked by academic and personal achievements that reflected her determination and brilliance. After attending Florida A&M University for her freshman year, she proudly became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Recognized for her talent, she was recruited as one of the first Black female tennis players at the University of Michigan, where she pursued her passion for mathematics. After graduating, Ella moved to New York City, where she taught math to high school students in the Bronx. Her students often arrived hungry and inadequately clothed, and Ella, moved by their struggles, selflessly provided food, clothing, and tutoring—all on a teacher’s salary.
Realizing she wanted to make a broader impact, Ella pivoted her career, earning her insurance license and breaking barriers as an African American woman in her field during the 1960s. It was during this time that she met Earl L. Wright, a chemist at Exxon. The two were married in 1965 in East Elmhurst, NY.
In 1973, Ella’s life took on new purpose with the birth of her daughter, Michelle E. (Wright) Clark. Ella poured her energy and heart into motherhood, even stepping away from her career to create a nurturing foundation for Michelle. The bond between Ella and Michelle was one of unwavering closeness, a testament to Ella’s devotion as a mother.
Ella’s joy multiplied in 2005 when she became a grandmother to Justin T. Clark. Her love for Justin knew no bounds; he was her pride and joy, and she dedicated her later years to supporting and celebrating his achievements.
Throughout her life, Ella faced challenges, including diabetic complications, breast cancer, and dementia, with resilience and grace. She remained a beacon of strength, proudly speaking her mind and offering guidance to those around her. Her sharp wit, generous spirit, and boundless love left an impression on all who knew her.
Ella’s legacy is not just in the professional barriers she shattered or the personal sacrifices she made, but in the lives she touched. Whether through her family, her students, or her community, Ella’s influence was profound and humbling. She lived for others—uplifting, nurturing, and inspiring everyone she encountered.
Ella is survived by her beloved daughter, Michelle E. (Wright) Clark; her cherished grandson, Justin T. Clark; her loving son-in-law, Kevin T. Clark; her dear sister, Annie M. Montgomery; her niece, Joy (Montgomery) Lee; her nephew, Peace Montgomery; and a host of great-nieces and nephews who will carry her memory forward.
Ella Maye Wright’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and a tireless dedication to lifting others. Her family and friends find comfort in knowing that her light will continue to shine in the lives she touched.
Rest in peace, Ella, knowing your life’s work was a testament to the power of love and humanity.
