Ellen Scott Obituary

On the afternoon of December 20, 2024, our beloved Ellen Arilen Scott, age 92 peacefully entered into eternal rest surrounded in prayer. Ellen, fondly known as “Ms. Scott", was born to the late Leo Bell, Sr., and Ellen Arlene Grant Bell on December 10, 1932. She was educated in the public school system of Norway, South Carolina and Washington, D.C.

Ellen was baptized at an early age and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. She was a strong woman of faith and a devout Catholic. In 1971 she became a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Washington, DC. She was a Eucharistic Minister, an active member of the Sodality of our Lady and a member of The Legion of Mary.

Ellen loved being a resident of Little Sisters of the Poor and would often say how blessed and thankful she was to be there. Up until her passing, she was a cherished resident for twenty-six wonderful years, during which time she formed dear friendships, took part in activities, retreats and managed the country store. She attended mass and prayed the rosary daily.

Ellen was a caring and strong woman of faith. She taught and modeled to her loved ones how to pray and live according to God’s Law. She continually gave of herself to her family and church community. She loved to cook and was an excellent chef often preparing meals with a cheerful, “that’s delicious.” She regularly prepared meals for the priests and made chicken soup for Sunday brunch after mass. Ellen hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for the family. She also enjoyed going to the beach.

Ellen leaves to cherish her memory seven children; Faye A. Mayes, Dwight J. Mayes (Rondelle), Charlean Mayes, Ellen A. Clarke, Lillian Middleton (Steven), Roaenetta Browne (Gregory), Charles McKoy (Tunisia); twenty-one grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is survived by five sisters: Lillie Allen, Loretta Tice, Leois Jamison (Charles), Brenda Jamison (Calvin), Greta Jackson, nine sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law. She is predeceased by her husband, Charles H. Scott, her parents, twelve brothers and two sisters. The family will forever cherish the memories of Ellen and her legacy of love and faith. She will be deeply missed by all who know her.
