Evelyn Young Obituary

Evelyn Louise Young, affectionately known as "Ev" and lovingly called Ma was born June 25, 1936, at Freedman's Hospital in Washington, D.C.  She was the first of seven children born to the late Estelle Jane and Clarence McKinley Green.

Evelyn was reared in the tight knit Black enclave known as Linden, Silver Spring, Md., in a loving home defined by patriotism, history, and intellect. She carefully watched, studied, and copied the gentleness of her Mother, but decidedly, in her own words, she was a "Daddy's girl".

Evelyn was educated in the Montgomery County school system pre-Brown v Board of Education, where she excelled in the homemaking skills curriculum.

Beyond cooking, Evelyn's teenage passion was dancing. She would show off her fancy Jump Jive choreography in D.C.'s U Street "Sock Hop Clubs". She was very popular with her cohorts, and it was a treat to get a chance to spin Evelyn Green around the dance floor in her Bobby Socks and Poodle Skirt.

Evenly put away her dancing shoes when she met the love of her life, the handsome private, Charles Henry Young at the Walter Reed's Soldier's Club located near the Linden Community. Charles and Evelyn were soon married, moved to Philadelphia, PA., and started a family.

In 1961 they relocated and settled in Evelyn's beloved birth town, Washington, D.C., raising a rambunctious family of eight children with the constant admonishment "Together we stand, divided we fall".  Among the lively clatter and chaos of managing her own mini army, Evelyn delighted in creating a stylish, yet cozy and comfortable home for her family. She excelled in the domestic arts. Mom was a consummate giver, and she fiercely loved her children, grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, and great great great-grandchildren. She would say, my children are my therapy.

Evelyn was expansively spiritual and God fearing. She was a founding member of the New Creation Baptist Church, pastored by Reverend Doctor Ella V. Redfield. Evelyn led the ministry to collect clothing after a disaster in Africa. She and her team travelled to Philadelphia where the items would be shipped.

In later years, Mom was blessed to spend more time on her personal hobbies. She loved thrifting, and she was a master at Jigsaw Puzzles. Then, there was her garden. Mom loved flowers and made it clearly known that she preferred to have her blooms fresh, while she was alive and could enjoy them.

In her ninth decade, Mom rediscovered her teenage passion for dancing. You could see her at home and at the "Sassy Seasoned Seniors" program swaying and stepping in time to classic music and golden oldies.

On December 29, 2025, God called Mom home.

Evelyn Louise Young peacefully transitioned these earthly bounds to her heavenly home, surrounded by her family at her Washington, D.C. residence.

Evelyn leaves to cherish precious memories five children, one son-in-law, and one daughter-in-law; Cheryl D. Gillette, Debra Young (Bryan), Joan Young, Karen E. Young, and Charles H. Young, Jr. (Leslie), nine grandchildren; Vance M. Warren (M'chelle), Corey V. Wallace (Shadonna), Erica F. Gillette, Carl M. Newton, David Gillette, Daniel M. Newton, Amber A. Young, Jason Young, and Danielle Young, nine great-grandchildren; Vance M. Warren, Jr. (Erica), Gabrielle Warren, Nyette Wallace, McKenzie Warren, Tsi Tsi M. Green, Margurite Green, Janice Walston, and Rev. Dr. Ella V. Redfield, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and family and friends.
