Harriet Clipper Obituary

Harriet Mae Washington Clipper transitioned to be with her Lord on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Montcare Rehabilitation facility. She was born September 18,1924 in Martinsburg, MD to William Washington and Carey Hallman Washington. Harriet was one of five children, Julia Mae Randolph, Louise Jefferson, Charles Washington, and Clarence Washington. She was raised by her uncle and grandmother. She lived with the Armstead family where she was employed.

She joined Warren United Methodist Church in Martinsburg, MD. As the years went on, she married Benjamin Harrison Clipper on June 9, 1949, at the age of 23. This union produced two, Maxine Louise and Benjamin Jose Clipper. Harriet and Ben resided on Berryville Road. She lived with Ben's parents, Harry and Ruby Clipper, for 8 years. They later built their family home at 14050 Berryville Road.

She joined Seneca Community Church in 1949.  Her favorite day of the week was Sunday. She was a member of the Senior Usher Board where her uniform of white was neatly pressed, Flower Club and Willing Workers and other activities to support the Church. She did fundraisers, like dinners. She was involved in her husband's many fundraisers. Harriet was well known for her sweet tea, lemon pies, beets, and strawberry shortcakes. She was also known tor her fashionable hats.

One of her favorite daily rituals was to sweep her front and back porches. Another ritual for Harriet and Maxine was to say the Lord's Prayer together each night. Afterwards, she would ask for her lip gloss.

Following her employment as a domestic worker, Harriet worked at the Surrey Novelty Store in Potomac, MD for 25 years. She retired at the age of 62.

Harriet would read the Washington Post every day from front to back. She would let you know what was going on whether you wanted to hear it or not.

Her favorites television shows were Let's Make a Deal, and The Price is Right. Her favorite news anchors were Al Roker and Leon Harris.

She loved travelling with her daughter to Hawaii, the Bahamas, Las Vegas, and Charlestown. She also loved dining out at MID-Atlantic, Mountain Gate and the Golden Corral. Her favorite ice cream was butter pecan.

Harriet leaves to mourn her devoted and loving daughter, Maxine, her loving son, Jose (Sheila), her loving, Justin (Jessica), Sicily, two special nieces, Shirley Shields and Patricia Clipper, a special neighbor, Sally Tynes-Mboye, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and a host of friends.
