Helen Elizabeth Woods (affectionally known as Cousin Helen, Aunt Helen) peacefully entered eternal rest with her family at her bedside on Wednesday April 6th, 2022, at her home in Laurel, Maryland. Helen was born to the late Alice Woods Conway and William Harrison, Step-father Reverend Louis D. Conway, on April 20th, 1928.
She attended Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland. She then went to work for the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, Maryland where she was a statistical clerk and assistant, Helen retired in 1983 after 32 years of service.
On February 25th1954, Helen was united in marriage to Ellsworth “Billy” Crutchfield. Although the couple had no children, later in life they became pet parents to their beloved cat Sam.
Very active in her community, she served on the Laurel Grove Civic Association, Boy Scout Troop 737, Concerned Citizens of Laurel, Inc. and First Generation College Bound. Helen also was very active in her church Saint Mary of the Mills teaching religious education classes, she also helped at VBS at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
Helen credited her Parents, Grandparents, Bertha Moore, and Katie Hopkins, as influencing her and being role models. When asked what things she couldn’t live without she stated, ‘Love and the freedom to Worship”. If ever you needed prayer, you could call and be assured that your name was placed on her daily prayer list.
As days led up to her passing, Helen would quote the “Lord’s Prayer” always telling everyone who dropped by “Thank you and I Love you”. Helen will be truly missed, as she was a remarkable Lady of Faith and her actions spoke louder than words.
Other than scripture Helens preferred reading was poetry, with her favorite poem titled “Lend A Helping Hand” so appropriate for someone who has extended her hand and heart to SO many, for SO many years.
She leaves to cherish her memories, Joseph R. Conway (stepbrother) devoted cousins Bill Scott Joyce Miller and a host of other relatives, neighbors, and friends.
