Jai Gopal
(1938 – 2023)
Jai Gopal, 85, of Olney, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, August 12, 2023. He was born on July 20, 1938, in Barout, India, to Hukmi Devi and Ratti Ram Gupta. He was the middle child of three brothers and five sisters.
Jai attended Arya College in Panipat, India, and graduated from Punjab University with a bachelor's degree. He married Urmila Gupta on December 12, 1960, and they had two sons, Rajeev and Vivek.
Jai served in the Government of India in various positions and departments. In 1978, he was posted to the Supply Wing, Embassy of India in Washington, D.C. After his retirement from the embassy, he settled in Virginia and made it his home state. He later moved to Maryland in 1983 and lived in Gaithersburg and Olney.
Jai had a passion for gardening, singing, and social service. He supported many religious organizations throughout his life, and his gazals and bhajans were a regular feature at parties and religious ceremonies. He also served on the board of Rajdhani Mandir, a religious and charitable organization in Chantilly, Virginia.
Jai is survived by his wife, Urmila; his sons, Rajeev and Vivek; his grandchildren, Mahi, Tejus, Veerain, and Raveena; and his many nephews, nieces, and friends.
He will be remembered for his love of family and friends, his commitment to service, and his zest for life. He was the wise man.
A memorial service will be held at Snowden Funeral Home in Rockville Maryland on Wednesday, March 16, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.
