James Gilmore Pumphrey, son of the late Herbert and Beatrice Pumphrey, was born on February 23, 1939, in Montgomery County, MD. He departed Tuesday, July 14th, 2020, at his residence in Germantown, Maryland.
Jimmy, as he was affectionately called by friends and family, received his education at Carver High School in Rockville, MD where he graduated.
After graduation, James worked for the Montgomery County Public School System; and through the years, he worked at different schools in the area until he retired in the summer of June 2013. He also spent many years working part-time in the Security Department at MedStar Montgomery (formerly Montgomery General Hospital) in Sandy Spring, MD. He enjoyed his work there very much until December 19th, 2019, when he took a leave of absence. The hobbies he enjoyed in his free time were playing and coaching softball, winning multiple division titles; and spending time with his grandson, Brandon.
James was married to Betty M. Dorsey on March 28, 1962, until his untimely death on July 14th, 2020.
In his passing he leaves to mourn his wife Betty M. Pumphrey; a daughter, Cynthia D. Pumphrey; a son, Richard W. Pumphrey; one grandson, Brandon M. Msendo; a son-in-law, Hamisi J. Msendo; one sister, Charlotte Thomas (Cleon); a sister-in law, Faye Johnson; a brother-in-law, William Dorsey as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.
James is preceded in death by siblings Annette, Claudia, Douglas, Gee Gee, Johnny, and Winnie Pumphrey.
