Reflections of His Life

1951– 2024

Joe Wilson Saunders was born on May 29, 1935, in West Virginia, and peacefully passed away on February 25, 2025, at the age of 89.

At the age of eighteen, Joe proudly joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Topeka, Kansas. During his time in the military, he became a member of a Naval chorus group, traveling to different naval bases to sing for the troops, sharing his passion for music and uplifting the spirits of fellow servicemen.

While in Topeka, Joe attended Washburn University, where he pursued his education and expanded his opportunities for the future.

Following his military service and studies, Joe moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he embarked on an entrepreneurial journey by founding his own technology company, making history as the first in his family to pursue business ownership. Through his business acumen and determination, Joe secured contracts supplying parts for the U.S. Air Force, contributing to military operations while continuing his connection to the armed forces.

Throughout his life, Joe lived in several cities, including Cleveland, Ohio, before eventually resettling in Washington, D.C., where he continued to embrace new opportunities and experiences.

Joe had a deep love for jazz music, which filled his home and heart with joy. More than anything, he cherished his family, always finding time to support and uplift those he loved.

He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Maggie Saunders; his brothers, Frank Saunders, Charles Saunders, and William Saunders; and his sisters, Mildred Barnes and Bobbie Jean Wilson.

Joe is survived by his sister, Gloria Caldwell of Germantown, MD, and his brother, Robert Saunders (Eleanor) of New Haven, CT. He also leaves behind his former wife, Lois Saunders of Omaha, NE, and their beloved daughter, Stephanie Joe Artis of Omaha, NE, as well as his former wife, Theresa Jenkins of Silver Spring, MD.

Joe Wilson Saunders’ legacy of service, education, entrepreneurship, music, and unwavering love for family will forever be remembered by those whose lives he touched.
