Joseph Cooper Obituary

Joseph Cooper, born on January 5, 1932, passed peacefully on December 28, 2025, at the age of 93, surrounded by the love of his family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Cooper, his partner in life for 67 years. Anyone who knew them knew that theirs was a love built on faith, loyalty, and family. We can almost hear Virginia saying, “Joseph, what took you so long?” It brings our family great comfort and even joy knowing that they have been reunited once again in heaven.

Joseph was the proud father of eight children: Gwendolyn Dorsey, David Cooper (Claudia), Jody Friend (Michael) Dee Dee Davis (Aaron), Renee Cooper, Tim Cooper, Jeanine Cooper, and Chris Cooper (Mandy), along with his nephew Barry Payton, whom he and Virginia lovingly raised as their own. His children were his world, and he showed his love not just through words, but through his steady presence, guidance, and quiet sacrifices.

Born to Nelson Cooper and Miloy Carroll, Joseph was one of six children and was preceded in death by his brother Nelson and his sisters McRein, Katie, Elizabeth (Lilly), and Nebraska. He grew up in Rockville, Maryland, where he learned early the values of hard work, kindness, and helping others.

Joseph proudly served his country in the United States Army as a mechanic and was honorably discharged. Following his military service, he spent his entire career working as a mechanic and parts manager with Ford Motor Company. Though the dealerships changed names over the years—Rockville Ford, Century Ford, Al Packer Ford, Koons Ford, and Lindsay Ford—Joseph remained constant. He was loyal, dependable, and deeply respected. His work schedule was so reliable you could set your watch by him. He worked well into his eighties and only retired for good during the COVID pandemic due to health complications.

A devout Catholic, Joseph was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church. His faith wasn’t just something he practiced on Sundays—it guided how he lived every day.

Joseph was a beloved fixture in his neighborhood. Everyone knew Joseph, and everyone loved him. He was always fixing a neighbor’s car, giving someone a ride to church, or stepping in whenever help was needed. Saying “no” simply wasn’t in him.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength through his sixteen cherished grandchildren: Latia Parris-Barnes, (Antar), Loren Friend, Jabari Friend, Gabrielle Dorsey, Josh Dorsey, Terrence Cooper, David Cooper Jr., Joey Davis, Alex Davis, Aylia Lawyer, Jazmine Cooper, Erin Cooper, Amir Cooper, Jesse Cooper, Christopher Cooper, Courtney Cooper. He was preceded in death by one beloved grandchild, Kyle Cooper. His love continues through his great-grandchildren: Corey Barnes, Naomi Barnes, Carson Lawyer, Grayson Barnett, Landon Parker, and Jacoby Parker, who will grow up hearing stories about the man who helped shape our family.

Joseph is also survived by his brothers-in-law Donald Payton (Betty) and Larry Payton (Carrie), his sisters-in-law Geraldine Payton-Brown and Patricia Hubbard, and a host of nieces and nephews

who loved him dearly. His in-laws affectionately knew him simply as “Bruh,” a name that perfectly reflected the closeness and love they shared.

To us, Joseph was more than all the roles he held. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a faithful servant of God, and a man who showed his love through action. His kindness, generosity, and quiet strength will live on in our hearts forever.
