Joyce Hackey Colbert was born in Sandy Spring, Maryland on April 20, 1949 to Georgia Demar Groomes and the late Emery Hackey. Joyce transitioned on Wednesday October 14th at the White Oak Medical Center in Silver Spring, MD.
On September 20, 1969, Joyce Hackey married Roland Joseph Colbert and moved to Montgomery County, Maryland. Joyce and Jimmie were happily married for 47 years. From this union, she became a devoted mother to Erica and Roland “Jay” Joseph II.
After receiving her education from the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and receiving her BS from Bowie State University, Joyce returned to MCPS and spent over 41 years educating students, training teachers, writing curriculum, and supervising new teachers in MCPS. While performing all of these positions, she went back to school and earned her Master’s in Education. After retirement from MCPS, Joyce worked in Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) as a Title I Specialist.
Joyce enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was an outstanding line dancer and loved music. Joyce enjoyed family gatherings, shoe and handbag shopping, and “running to the store.”
Joyce was a very active member at Goshen United Methodist Church where she served in many capabilities.
Joyce had a passion of spoiling her grandbabies; Kyla, Kayson, Lennox and even the fur grand, Max.
Joyce leaves to mourn her passing her loving mother, Georgia Groomes (Pudd), one daughter Erica Stephenson (Ralston), one son Roland “Jay” Joseph II (Jordan), two brothers, Anthony Groomes (Nikora) and Emery (JR) Hackey (Tina); two sisters, Deborah P. Frazier and Rhonda Hackey; one granddaughter, Kyla Stephenson; two grandsons, Kayson Stephenson and Lennox Colbert; one sister-in-law, Shirley Colbert Swinton (Gene), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Joseph Colbert, Sr.
