Joyce Phillips Obituary

Joyce Mae Phillips, age 82, passed away peacefully at her home in Boyds, Maryland, on Friday, November 21, 2025, after a short illness.

Born on December 23, 1942, Joyce was the beloved daughter of the late Clifton and Helen Warren. She graduated from Gaithersburg High School and later married the love of her life, the late Laurell R. Phillips, Sr., on September 3, 1962.

A devoted wife and mother, Joyce, worked tirelessly throughout her life, including many years in domestic work, to support her family—especially after her husband became ill. Her dedication extended beyond her own children to her grandchildren, whom she helped raise with deep love and commitment. Whether she was dropping them off at daycare, putting them on the school bus, or caring for them throughout the day, “Granny” was a constant source of comfort. Summers with her were especially cherished, filled with the best breakfasts, delicious lunches, and when the parents came a take home dinner was waiting.

In January 1974, Joyce dedicated her life to Jehovah and symbolized her devotion through baptism. She remained a faithful and loyal servant for over 50 years. Even though she could not attend the meetings at the Kingdom Hall in person, she continued to worship and participate via Zoom.

Her enduring faith brought her daily peace, and she began each morning with heartfelt study and meditation on Jehovah’s love and guidance.

Joyce was known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family. One of her greatest joys was cooking—especially the treasured “Sunday Dinners” she hosted for more than two decades. These gatherings became a beloved family tradition, filled with delicious meals, laughter, and warm conversation. Prior to COVID, the family talked so much about Sunday Dinner to others that everyone wanted to be included. Even during COVID, she continued to cook meals for her aunt, sister, and sister-in-law, thoughtfully sending them with her son Laurell to deliver.

Her home was always a place of welcome. Many sought her counsel, comfort, and companionship, drawn by her big heart, warm smile, and nonjudgmental nature. One dear friend wrote, “I loved her. She was my sounding board and confidant. Joyce eased my mind and soul every time I was in her presence.” That sentiment reflects the feelings of all who were blessed to know her.

Joyce is survived by her four loving children: Pamela Farooq (Jamal), Laurell Phillips, Jr., Terence Phillips (Vanessa), and Angela Ragsdale (William). She also leaves behind nine grandchildren—Harold Duffin, Alicia Duffin, Stephanie Phelan, Amber Zucker, William Ragsdale, Michael Ragsdale, Sierra Johnson, Kayla Phillips, and Tre Phillips; four step-grandchildren—Tish Jackson, Kyra Jackson, Jamal Farooq, and Jalil Farooq; and seven great-grandchildren. Joyce is also survived by her sister Mildred Warren; her brother George Warren (Joy); her sister-in-law Barbara Dorsey; brother-in-law Andre Parent; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and her Jehovah’s Witness brothers and sisters.

Joyce’s legacy of love, faith, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
