Julia Scott Obituary

The late Julia Gee Scott transitioned peacefully surrounded by loved ones at her home in Germantown, Maryland on Friday, December 13, 2024.

Julia was born June 5, 1967, in Sacramento, California to William and Sadie Gee. She spent her earlier years in Sacramento before the family moved to Sterling, Virginia in 1973. She received her early education in Sterling and graduated from Park View High School in 1985. In high school, Julia was very involved in extra-curricular activities: she was leader of the marching band, and she performed in the school’s production of Fiddler on the Roof.

For college, Julia ventured south to attend the University of Florida, where she received an Associate of Arts degree in 1989. Later, she attended Virginia Tech, where she graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Management.

Julia loved nature. She loved spending time outdoors, including hiking, gardening, and going to the beach. She loved the water and the beauty of aquatic life, even imagining herself as a mermaid. She especially loved long walks with Brian in their Germantown neighborhood where they lived for over 10 years. She also loved animals—all animals, but especially horses. She owned many pets throughout her lifetime, including a ferret, three turtles, Q the bird, and her beloved dog, Teagan.

Julia worked with animals throughout her career. One of her favorite jobs was at the Florida Museum of Natural History. She cared for and handled (non-poisonous) snakes and gave lectures and demonstrations to elementary school children. Her love of animals led to her being on the local news, where she was interviewed holding a snake. Thereafter, she became known as “the snake lady” throughout the town. Other jobs included a research assistant, radio-tracking deer and panthers in Florida; a veterinary assistant; and an intern, conducting research in the wild at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in Kentucky. Most recently, Julia was employed by Best Friends Pet Care in Gaithersburg. She was loved by the pets and the clients alike and made great tips!

Julia loved life and was full of energy. Her joy and her smile were infectious. At any party, you could find her on the dance floor, especially doing the latest line dance. And if there was a karaoke machine, she couldn’t resist grabbing the mic and singing an old-school jam. She loved all genres of music and attended many concerts, including Earth, Wind, and Fire. She loved to sing showtunes and enjoyed movie musicals and musical theater. But the artist Prince was her favorite, and she was deeply moved by his premature passing. She also found joy in singing in the His W.I.L. Mass choir under the direction of Joshua Sommerville.

She was also adventurous and loved to travel, including trips with the family to the Caribbean, Aruba, Mexico, and Alaska. For one birthday, Brian gifted her flying lessons, and she recently fulfilled a lifelong dream of taking a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon and the Las Vegas Strip.

The love of Julia’s life was her family. She thoroughly enjoyed road trips to attend the annual Scott Family Reunion and often spent time with her parents at their home in Reedville, VA. Whenever she could, she would share her love for nature with her sons, nieces, and nephews. She was a devoted wife and a dedicated mother, daughter, sister, and aunt.

Julia fought the good fight. She became a cancer advocate and warrior, helping to raise funds for cancer treatment. She will be fondly remembered by all who had the opportunity to know her. Because to know her, was to love her.

Julia leaves to mourn her husband of 25 years, Brian. Three sons: Brian Jr “Jay”, Darius, and Lucas. A bonus son: Terrell Johnson. One granddaughter: Jayvyn Scott. Her father: William Gee and mother: Sadie Gee, of Reedville, VA. A mother-in-law: Priscilla Scott of Gaithersburg, MD. Siblings: Morris B. Gee (Janet) of Bedford, Ohio; Cathy D. Kearney (Robin) of Tarboro, NC; William R. Gee III (Lisa) of Ashburn, VA; Moira G. Travis (Pierre) of Hampton, VA; Tequia L. Garrison of Largo, MD. A brother-in-law: Tony D. Scott (Justin) of Los Angeles, CA. Two sisters-in-law: Tammy Scott Davison (Earnest) of Randallstown, MD. Nedria Von Bailey (Collins) of New Bern, NC. And a host of cherished aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
