Karen Vanessa Owens (affectionately known as “Ness,” “Aunt Nessy,” and “Vanessa”) was born on August 31, 1962, to the late Dennis and Ethel Pauline Graham Owens. She was the youngest of six children. Vanessa, as most of us lovingly called her, was raised in Poolesville, Maryland, where she attended Poolesville Elementary School and Poolesville Jr.–Sr. High School.
During her school years, Vanessa was actively involved in many activities. She was a proud member of the Pom Pom Squad and participated in girls’ tennis, volleyball, and basketball. She later attended Bowie State College before beginning her career with the United States Postal Service on January 27, 1983. Vanessa dedicated over 27 years of service before her health began to decline, leading to her retirement.
Vanessa gave her life to the Lord at an early age. She regularly attended church with her parents and siblings and became a devoted and active member of Pleasant Grove Christian Community Church. She faithfully served as Financial Secretary on the Executive Board and was also a member of the Women’s Christian Service Council Committee. Vanessa shared her love for music through her participation in church choirs, including the Blue Orioles and later the PGCCC Adult Choir. She truly enjoyed singing and found joy in attending various churches and listening to gospel groups. She was also a member of the Montgomery County Chapter of the Bowie State University Alumni Association.
Vanessa was deeply family-oriented. She had a special love for her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and godparents. She cherished her nieces, nephews, and godchildren, and held a close bond with her siblings—often jokingly embracing the role of the “oldest” with her strong, spirited personality. Despite her boldness, she had a kind heart, a gentle spirit, and a beautiful smile that could light up any room. She was admired, loved, and respected by many, and her circle of friends was a testament to the impact she had on those around her.
Vanessa will be deeply missed but never forgotten. She leaves to cherish her precious memories her sisters, Debra T. Boyd (Eric) and Tracey L. Gray; her brother, Joseph L. Owens (Julia); her nieces and nephews, Aneka T. Owens and Eric M. Boyd II; her goddaughter, Tasha L. Gray (Jeffery), and godson, Terrence Gray (Laquonia).
She is also lovingly remembered by her great-nieces and great-nephews: Khalil D. Owens (also her godson), Camya Ross (John), Ta’Nya Pryor, Ta’Mya Pryor, Nehemiah Alford, Titus Lee, Talon Lee, Terrence Gray II, and Tayden Gray; as well as her great-great-niece, Jah’miylah, and great-great-nephew, Jha’mir.
Vanessa is further survived by her aunts, Shirley Plummer and Doris Graham Copeland; her godchildren, Airian Johnson, Maya Henderson, and Myles Henderson; her godsister, Elaine Dorsey; her godbrothers, Glenn Graham and Michael Huff; along with a host of cousins, extended family, and dear senior friends, including Ms. Theresa Brown, Ms. Louise Nickens, Ms. Anna Mae Smith, Ms. Rudine Thomas, and Ms. Joyce Zeigler. She also leaves behind her devoted friends, Rev. Bernadette Armwood, Deborah Henderson, and Jackie Robinson, as well as her PGCCC church family.
