Lawrence (Larry) David Coleman, was born on December 27, 1944 and raised in Rockville, Maryland. He was the youngest of five sons born to Howard T. Coleman and Ruby I. Coleman. He attended Montgomery County Public Schools and graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland. He served four years in the United States Air Force upon high school graduation. He married Pauline S. Lefeged in 1965 and they moved to Wheaton. The marriage ended in divorce. After his honorable discharge from the US Air Force, he served with the DC Air National Guard. Shortly after having two sons, they moved to Olney, Maryland, buying a home in the neighborhood of Olney Mill. He was employed by the federal government as a programmer for the National Science Foundation for more than 30 years. Upon retirement, he worked part-time as a Montgomery County Police Department dispatcher.
Lawrence (Larry) Coleman was a lifetime member of Black Ski, Inc. (BSI) for over 30 years, serving in many roles, including as a member of the BSI Board of Directors as Board Chairman and TeamBSI Cycling Coordinator. He organized and led group trips across the globe, taking people to many places, including France, Australia, New Zealand, Machu Picchu, and South America to name a few. Intent on adding new experiences to BSI, Larry organized hikes throughout Maryland’s hills and the annual TeamBSI Bike Ride and Cookout. For many years, Larry funded the TeamBSI Bike Ride and Cookout with his personal funds. Larry loved venturing out for new experiences and he was quick to ask others to join him, flashing his signature smile.
Larry was an avid baseball and basketball fan and he enjoyed attending Washington Nationals and Washington Wizards games in person. He enjoyed discussing life topics with his son, Tony. He also loved spending time with his precious and funny grandchildren, Riley and Cameron, who referred to him as “Little Pop Pop” because their other grandfather is much taller than him. Little Pop Pop stayed fit by working out with his senior fitness group at Longwood Community Center in Olney.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, his son Lawrence D. Coleman Jr., and his brothers, Thomas Edgar Coleman, Reginald (Reggie) E. Coleman, Adrian (Wep) Webster Coleman, and Howard Wallace Coleman, Jr. He leaves behind his son Tony Coleman, his daughter-in-law Sheree, granddaughter Riley, grandson Cameron, sister-in-law Rae Coleman, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. He was a friend to many and he will be missed.
