Leonard Elroy Jackson departed this life peacefully at the age of 92 on Friday, November 6, 2020. Leonard was born in Sandy Spring, Maryland, May 6, 1928, to Andrew Albert Jackson and Eliza Blevins Jackson. Leonard spent most of his childhood in Baltimore County, Maryland with his mother. Leonard was a God-fearing man, who attended Mass faithfully the early part of his life. Leonard attended High school in Catonsville, MD. After graduation, he took college courses. Leonard was drafted into the United States Army in 1950 at the age of 21 to fight in the Korean War. He was shipped off to Fort Meade, in Maryland where he received final orders to Korea. Leonard was happy to serve his country and received a Purple Heart award.
Leonard was ambitious and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his son Ramone, grandson Gerald and nephew Paul. In his spare time, Leonard loved to spend time with his brother and his best friend, Grafton Brown for over 60 years. They would sit around and talk about the good old days. Many loved Leonard!
He was easygoing, had a superb spirit, had stellar letter writing skills and was dedicated to his family. Leonard learned to appreciate the great things in life after returning home from the War. Upon his return, Leonard embarked on a new career as an amateur boxer. His name was Scrappy. He became a household name in the Jackson family and the Washington, DC area.
Later, he accepted a career position in District of Columbia Regulatory Consumer Affairs as a Lead Investigator. He received awards for outstanding accomplishments and achievements. He retired in 1985. In addition, he provided security to celebrities at the BET Sound Stage after retirement.
Leonard was fond of his cousins Ronnie and Maurice. He loved spending time in Baltimore with his grandchildren and other family members. Leonard had a personal relationship with each one of his children. Leonard was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather.
Leonard found joy in entertainment, especially when he attended family functions. Sunday's was his favorite past time to watch sports including baseball and football. He was fan of the Baltimore Orioles, Ravens, and the Washington Football Team formally Washington Redskins. He loved to dance and listen to old school, mainly Motown hits. Leonard was a very starched man, who believed that you must take responsibility for your actions. If something concerned Leonard, you could expect a letter in the mail because he believed in order. He often wrote letters to Government officials on his views, including President Barrack Obama and he received a personal response from him.
Leonard was full of life and found happiness when he met and fell in love the woman of his dreams, Nancy. Leonard married Nancy and they spent over 25 years together and shared special moments attending family events. They loved dancing and listening to music. He would always say, "I love my wife's pretty legs". He was eternally grateful to have Nancy in his life. He enjoyed and loved her courage and strength. Their blended families brought him joy. He was smitten with the large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren they had. He had a keen affection for his great grandson Nolan.
Leonard was a man of honor and high standards. He was a very happy and giving man and desired the best for all people. He contributed his life to our country and especially to family. To know him, you knew that he was an amazing man, with wealth of knowledge and understanding of life. Leonard also known as "Scrappy” will be missed! He left a mark on our hearts and souls. We love him deeply for all he has done and given!
Mr. Jackson is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Eliza Blevins Jackson; four sisters, Mildred, Margaret, Mayble, and Helen and three brothers, Sylvester, Herbert, and William
He is survived by his wife Nancy Jackson; two daughters , Denise Ausby and Laquachia Driggleone, and three sons, Van Anderson, Ramone Jackson, and Leonard Elroy Jackson Jr, Step children, LaWanda Britt, George Smith, Angelique Mcpherson , Zane Smith, Orlando Smith; grandchildren, Gerald V. Marshall, Nekia Brown, Aaron Jonathan Ausby, Stephen Ausby, Diamond Ausby, Dominique Ausby, Trevar Jackson, Leonard Louis Jackson, Lauren Jackson, Gregory Jackson; nephew, Paul Jackson (wife Marlene Jackson) special friend Orndorff Jeffries and host of family and friends
