Leslie Mitchell Obituary

Leslie Elaine Mitchell was born on November 25, 1962 in Bethesda, Maryland, to the late Mr. Edward James Offutt Jr. and Mrs. Hazel Marie Offutt. She was one of six siblings, with one preceding her in death. Throughout their life, Leslie was known as a protector, a Robinhood, and one who cared deeply for their wellbeing. She is remembered for supporting their aspirations and babysitting the neighborhood kids.

At a young age, Leslie was baptized at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Rockville and rededicated her life at the Inter-Denominational Church of God (ICOG) in Gaithersburg in 2017.

Leslie attended Montgomery County Public Schools and later went on to pursue careers in childcare and nursing. She obtained certifications in child development and as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Her passion and contribution to the wellbeing of the County’s most vulnerable people included working as intake worker and peer counselor for a Women’s shelter in Lincoln Park and as a CNA for Asbury Methodist Village. She was respected and admired by her colleagues.

Leslie was a loving wife to Barrington Mitchell, affectionately known as PJ, and a devoted parent to William James Moore Jr. and Keyonna LeAnn Offutt. She found joy in spending time with family and friends, eating seafood, and playing pool. She had hidden talents like writing poetry and styling hair. She was complex, strong, imperfectly perfect, and made no apologies for being herself. Leslie was affectionately known by all as Nana and will be deeply missed by all who shared in her life.

Leslie Elaine Mitchell is survived by her loving husband, Barrington Mitchell; her child: William (Stephanie) Moore Jr. of Germantown, MD; her step-children: Melissa Mitchell of Kingston, Jamaica; Millicent Mitchell of Montego Bay, Jamaica; Richard (Melicia) Mitchell of Montego Bay, Jamaica; Myesha Mitchell of Miami, Florida, Marjiea Mitchell of Kingston, Jamaica, Moya Mitchell of Kingston, Jamaica, Morrica Mitchell of Kingston, Jamaica, and Barrington Mitchell of Miami, Florida; her cherished grandchildren: Elias Moore, Von Moore, Kaila Styles, Saiyr Styles, Damani Malcom, Dajanae Williams, Amelia Boothe, and Joshia Mitchell; her mother: Hazel M. Offutt of Gaithersburg, MD; her siblings: Donna Offutt of Silver Spring, MD; Carol Johnson of Bethesda, MD; Edward (Karen) D. Offutt of Spring, TX; and Lena Offutt of Washington, D.C. She is also remembered fondly by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Leslie is preceded in death by her father, Edward James Offutt Jr.; her half -brother Gary (Tracey) Gray; and her daughter Keyonna LeAnn Offutt.

While she will be deeply missed, Leslie Elaine Mitchell’s legacy of love and perseverance lives on in the hearts of her family and friends.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered support, comfort, and sympathy during this difficult time.
