Locksley Eng Obituary

Locksley H. Eng, also known as Ng Hon-Keong, peacefully departed this world on the morning of December 20, 2024 at the age of 88 years old.

Born on January 1, 1936, in Guangzhou, China, Locksley was the cherished child of Ng Hun Nam and Ng Yuk Wan. He grew up surrounded by the love of his family, which included two older sisters, Oi Hung Wong and Irene Lau, both of whom have since passed, and a younger sister, Alice Lee.

Born into a family of distinction, he was the son of a revered officer of the 19th Route Army, who successfully fought against Japanese aggression in China. However, his childhood and life were profoundly changed with the assassination of his father during the Communist Revolution. The family abandoned their possessions and home to escape to Hong Kong.

In 1955, Locksley embarked on a transformative journey to America to pursue higher education. It was here that he chose the name "Locksley," inspired by Robin Hood from the classic tale, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood. He attended the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He continued his education at Purdue University and received a Master of Science in Civil Engineering. Not having enough money for the two-year long program and to the surprise of his professors, he completed the program in only one year.

He began his career designing bridges and roads; however, he was most proud of his tenure at Bechtel. Over the course of more than 40 years, he led the design of power plants and infrastructure projects that would serve communities around the world.

In 1969, family members orchestrated a meeting between Locksley and Teresa which blossomed into a beautiful marriage in 1970, and together they had two sons – Christopher in 1971 and Michael in 1978. Locksley’s family was his pride and joy. He devoted his life to protect them from the hardship he suffered growing up and to ensure they had every opportunity to thrive.

In a quiet farewell, the family held a private service and burial in Rockville, Maryland, honoring the life of a man who was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. His spirit is carried forward by his loving wife, Teresa; son Christopher and his wife, Gina; son Michael; grandchildren Jonathan and Baxter, sister Alice and the families of his nieces and nephews, including Diane Wong and husband, Phil Mortimer. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.
