97 Years Old

Mary Elizabeth Smith, affectionately known as “Lizzy” was born on March 3, 1927, in Washington DC.  She passed away peacefully at her residence in Tilghman Island, Maryland on February 24, 2025, surrounded by loving family members.

 She was married to the late Samuel C. Smith, Sr. (skilled brick mason) and together they built their home and raised their family in the Beltsville Maryland community.

 She formed long-term relationships during her 30-year tenure as the Residential Supervisor of Housekeeping at the University of Maryland, College Park. Two of her greatest joys were serving the Lord and sharing her talent as pianist/organist for Queen’s Chapel United Methodist Church Ministry of Music for over 58 years.

  Lizzy was the proud mother of five children - Samuel C. Smith, Jr. (deceased, 2021), Joyce D. Harrod, Debra A Muse, Darrell Edgar (died as infant), and Anthony (Tony) Smith. She had six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who referred to her fondly as “Momma Liz.”  A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends will remember her.

 Homegoing Services will be Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Queen’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 7410 Old Muirkirk Road, Beltsville, Maryland. The Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Funeral Services at 11 a.m. Interment at QCUMC Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to the Queen’s Chapel United Methodist Church Scholarship Foundation.
