Ossie White, Jr. Obituary

Ossie White, Jr. was born on January 2, 1957, in Washington, D.C., to his devoted parents, Ossie White Sr. and Dorothy E. Hudgens-White. From his earliest days, Ossie radiated warmth, wisdom, and strength, all qualities he would carry with him and share generously throughout his life.

Ossie’s life was deeply rooted in love. He was the devoted husband of Joyce E. White, with whom he shared 45 years of unwavering partnership, friendship, and laughter. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Shaynna and Ossie III, who were the pride and joy of his life. He was also a loving grandfather to his cherished granddaughter, Dorothy, whom he adored beyond measure. His family was his heart, his purpose, and his greatest source of pride.

A proud product of D.C. Public Schools, Ossie graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in 1975. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education from Cheyney University in 1981, and later a Master of Arts in Human Development from George Washington University in 2002. Education was not just his profession, it was his calling.

Ossie began his impactful career at Hamilton Alternative School as a Special Education teacher, later teaching at Davis Elementary, Anacostia High School, Dunbar High School (his alma mater), J.O. Wilson Elementary School, and Johnson Middle School. Throughout his decades of service in schools across Washington, D.C., he changed countless lives, not only by teaching, but by deeply connecting with students and families, always seeing potential where others saw challenge. He had a gift for reaching those who needed it most, guiding them with patience, compassion, and an unshakable belief in their worth.

Outside the classroom, Ossie brought that same vision and heart to the football field as a Junior Varsity and Varsity coach. At Anacostia High School, Dunbar High School and Oxon Hill High Schools, he coached teams to multiple championships, but wins were never his true measure of success. His legacy lives on in the young men he mentored. To Ossie, coaching was never just about football; it was about life. He taught his players to lead with integrity, to rise after failure, and to love themselves enough to strive for greatness. His messages of self-control, courage, wisdom, discipline, and grit remain etched in the hearts of the men he helped shape.

A man of deep faith and community service, Ossie was a proud and active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., initiated through the Kappa Psi Chapter in the Spring of 1982. He later became a committed member of Doric Lodge No. 19 in 2009. Through these brotherhoods, he continued to uplift others, lending his strength and wisdom to initiatives that empowered youth, families, and communities throughout the D.C. area.

Those who knew Ossie will remember his commanding presence, his booming laugh, and his gentle wisdom. He was a man who made everyone feel seen, heard, and valued. He was both a protector and a teacher, a builder of character and community.

Ossie is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce; his children, Shaynna and Ossie III (Ashley); his granddaughter, Dorothy White; his brothers Stanley (Carolyn) and Walter (Shirley); his sisters, Sally and Sheila; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, former students, mentees, fraternity & masonic brothers, colleagues, and friends.

His legacy is not just in what he achieved, but in who he empowered others to become.

Ossie White, Jr. will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather ("Pop Pop"), brother, teacher, coach, mentor, and friend. He gave his heart to the people he loved, and his impact will live on for generations to come.
