Obituary for Placido “Sidong” Piaoan Pang-ot

Placido “Sidong” Piaoan Pang-ot entered eternal rest on May 16, 2020. He was surrounded by his family. He lived in Montgomery Village, MD.

Placido Piaoan Pang-ot was born on June 19, 1929 in Sudipen, La Union, Philippines. He was more affectionately known as Papa or Lolo “Sidong.” He was immersed in the Catholic Christian community which was his lifelong support from an early age. He was preceded in death by his wife Josefa Ladio Pang-ot, his parents Felipe Busansog Pang-ot & Gregoria Gutab Piaoan, his siblings Herminio/Iniong, Salvador/Badul, Simplicio/Issio, Agustin/Osting, Isabelo/Severo, Leoncio, Leonila/Oning, and Manuel, and by his great grandson Jon Luie.

Sidong married the love of his life, Josefa L. Pang-ot on December 28, 1958 in Sudipen, La Union, Philippines. They were blessed with a large, loving family of three sons and three daughters. He helped raise his six children with patience, discipline and humility. Over the years, Sidong stayed active in the following associations: La Union Public School Teachers Association (LUPSTA), Sudipen Public School Teachers Association-(SUDIPSTA), and Knights of Columbus-La Union, Philippines Chapter. Sidong worked in Suyoc Mines where he was an elevator operator, diesel mechanic, and diesel operator, where eventually became surpervisor of. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education then became an honorable teacher at various elementary schools in Sudipen, La Union. He mainly taught at Old Sudipen Elementary School, where his wife Josefa was the principal. He continued pursuing his education and received a master’s degree in Mathematics. He taught Pilipino, Math & Industrial Arts. He was also the school’s sports coordinator, and a scout master of the Boys Scout of the Philippines, Sudipen, La Union Chapter. After his retirement in 1991, he dedicated himself as a public servant. Sidong ran and held the position of Vice Mayor for Sudipen, La Union from 1992 to 1995. Sidong was well accomplished with his achievements including: National Parents Accomplishment Award, Model Family Award Municipality of Sudipen and Provincial level of La Union, Media Award as Sudipen Vice Mayor, and Certificate of Recognition as Sudipen Vice Mayor. Sidong was a true educator at heart and loved his community. He was always kind and applied wisdom to all problems, no matter how small.

Sidong’s love for the environment was made known through various horticultural endeavors. He planted trees, and with great pride in his work, happily shared the literal fruits of his labor, such as delicious mangoes and bananas, with the community.

As a pioneer for Couples for Christ and President of his local Catholic pastoral council, Sidong guided others around him every day, especially with their Catholic faith. He dedicated his children growing up to God and encouraged them to explore the beauty of the gospels, and to live the life of a true Christian. Later in his life, he walked every day to his parish church, St. John Neumann for daily mass, and would pray daily rosary with a group at church. From blessing his meals to saying a prayer before trips for safe travel, it was evident his love for Jesus was overflowing; With his faith, Sidong led by example. Sidong always asked God for his guidance in everything he did. He brought his love for Jesus to every aspect in his life.

Memories of Sidong will be forever cherished by his siblings Estrella/Ester and Remy, his children & in-laws Celso L. Pang-ot (Lucrecia P.), Felimundo L. Pang-ot (Eufemia D.), Zosima L. Pang-ot, Josephine P. Libao (Paterno R.), Gracia P. Delacruz (Gerardo V.), and Placeldo L. Pang-ot, by his grandchildren Lucel Joeffrey (Sandee), Lucel Lynne, Lucel Luie (Jonalyn), Lucel Hubert (Sheila Mae), Lucel Joyziegrace (Julius), Lucel Fevianne, Lucel Placido (Jammie), Princess Hazzy (John Maynard), Xerxes Gem, Jopa Fame, Ruzl Ramzos, Mona Marie, Zoe Zabrine, Lyzza Joyce, Lloyd Peter Jay, Faith Josephine (Timothy), Jessica, Gerard Michael, Gregory Phillip, Gerlynne Grace, Gabriel Angelo, Gerardo Jr., and by his great grandchildren Charlemagne Joy, Ezekiah Grace, Luiela Cyline, Louanne Arcel, Luiegie Adrian, Jon Luie, Lyncel Jewel, Sophia Ezra, Jamcel Gabriel, Jamcel Zander, Zaylyn Faye, and Jairus Zach and a host of other relatives and friends.

The life of Placido Piaoan Pang-ot touched many people all over the world.

Papa/Lolo Sidong will be deeply missed.
