Richard Henry “Buzz” Stewart, Jr.
May 5, 1934 – July 21,2025
Richard Henry Stewart, Jr., was born to Richard H. Stewart and Rachel Posey Stewart on May 5,1934 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He died quietly peacefully and surrounded by love on July 21, 2025. Buzz was the youngest of 10 children. He always joked that when his father saw him, he exclaimed “perfection!” and gave him his name. Buzz lived all of his 91 years in Montgomery County, Maryland. He was employed for 37 years at the National Institute of Health. At the time of his retirement in 1989 he was the Property Manager at the National Eye Institute at NIH.
On October 27, 1961, he married Edith Clipper. Their home was one always filled with extended family and friends. There was never a shortage of good home cooked meals and laughter. He was a lifetime member of Goshen United Methodist Church, formerly known as Stewartown United Methodist Church. In 1944 at the age of 10 Buzz helped in construction of the church by carrying water to the brick layers. He continued to be a loyal and contributing member of the church, holding several different roles and singing in the Mass Choir for over 65 years. One of his favorite ways to serve God was through music. He sang with Good Hope Male Chorus and the Goshen United Methodist Men. One of his favorite songs was “Trouble in My Way”.
Buzz was a Mason for nearly 50 years and a member of Pythagoras Lodge No. 74. He held many responsibilities within the lodge. In December of 2017 he was given special recognition by the Masons for outstanding service to his lodge and honored as “Past Master”. Later in life he was fortunate enough to travel the world with long time partner Yvonne Trice. He was also an avid bowler, a pastime shared with his late sister Virgie Prather.
Buzz is survived by his son The Rev. Dr. Malcolm Frazier, grandchildren Nicole Bayles (Ed), Caroline Childs (George), great grandchildren, Lola, Connor, Ethan, Luci, William, devoted friend Yvonne Trice as well as many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his wife Edith Stewart and son Richard Steveson. He will be remembered as sharp dressed, generous and always with a smile on his face.
