Russelle Thomas Lucas, born October 19, 1958, in Washington, D.C., passed away peacefully on November 9, 2025, at the age of 67. He was the beloved son of the late James Russell and Audrey Mayberry Lucas and the cherished middle child between his older sister, Sharon, and younger brother, Audie.
Affectionately known as “Russ” to his friends, he spent his youth as an active member of the Boy Scouts, achieving the ranks of Life Scout, Eagle Scout, and Explorer. Russ also became a competitive swimmer, joining the Capital Sea Devils of Washington, D.C.
Russelle began his education at Jessie LaSalle Elementary School, continued at Bertie Backus Junior High School, and graduated from DeMatha High School, where he excelled on the swim team. His talent earned him a scholarship to Hampton Institute in Virginia, where he served as captain of the swimming team and pledged Xi Psi Chi. Russelle also pledged graduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
His education laid the foundation for a life dedicated to service and care for others. After graduating from Hampton, Russelle completed the police academy and proudly served as a member of the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department for several years. His commitment to his work reflected his character and devotion to his community.
In addition to his parents, Russelle was preceded in death by his daughter Brandy and his beloved brother, Audie Lucas.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted sister, Sharon; his loving daughters, Erica Purvis (Justin), Teena Harrison (Brandon), and Domanique Strong (Marcus); his adored grandchildren, Nazareth Purvis, and Payton and Israel Harrison; his aunts, Augusta Jones of Wilson, NC, Katherine Lucas of Rocky Mount, NC, and Freddie Lucas of Washington, D.C.; along with countless other relatives and friends.
Russelle will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
