Sara J. Bishop, affectionately called “Snookie” by those who loved her most, peacefully went home to Glory on July 19, 2025, at the age of 89.
Born on November 14, 1935, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore in Talbot County, Sara was the youngest of two daughters born to Delores B. Moaney and Master Sgt. John Moaney. She received her early education in Easton before moving to New York City, where she graduated from Madleigh High School with the Class of 1951. She later attended cosmetology school and found her calling in the beauty industry.
As a dedicated beautician, Sara relocated to Washington, D.C., where she built a thriving career spanning over 40 years. With warmth, talent, and an eye for beauty, she offered hair styling and self-care to generations of clients many of whom became lifelong friends.
On March 6, 1992, Sara married John Bishop, a property manager in Prince George’s County until his death, August 10, 2006. Together, they shared a rich life filled with music, travel, and celebration. Sara and John often attended intimate concerts, cabarets, and social events, occasions she thoroughly enjoyed. She had a special love for cooking, dancing, and listening to music, especially Al Green. She also enjoyed hosting gatherings especially when shared with her family and dear friends.
Sara was a member of St. John’s Baptist Church in Columbia, Maryland.
Sara’s proudest role was that of a loving mother. She is survived by her three children, Deborah Prather (Ronald), Lisa Butler, and Rodney Butler; two grandchildren, Hans Jackson (Abena) and Darrin Thompson; and two great-grandchildren, Landyn Johnson and Caylen Jackson. She was also the loving younger sister of the late Anna Butler and a beloved aunt to Stacy Butler. Sara leaves behind a host of cousins, extended family members, and friends who cherished her deeply.
Sara will be remembered for her elegance, her devotion to family, and her unwavering sense of style. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched with kindness, care, and joy.
