Thomas Edmond Garey, Sr. was born on November 19, 1933 in the District of Columbia. On the evening of Saturday, May 9, 2020 Thomas (Tom) made his peaceful and triumphant transition from his earthly life to his eternal home in glory.

Tom was the eldest of nine siblings of the late Helen Virginia and Jack Johnson Garey. Tom married the love of his life Doretha Elizabeth Hyson on September 11, 1955.  Their union was blessed with Juanita, Beverly, Teresa, Thomas, Jr. (Tony), and Eric. Tom attended Montgomery County Public School and graduated in 1951 from Lincoln High School.

Tom enlisted in the United States Army January 7, 1952 during the Korean War era then quickly advanced to Captain.  Tom received an Honorable Discharge December 16, 1954 then joined the National Guard until he attended the Glaziers Union Local 963. Tom worked in the construction trade as a brick layer and a glazier for more than 45 years where he shared his knowledge, skills, and mentored countless individuals in the workforce. Afterwards Tom and his son Tony went into business building their company known as T&T Glass.  Tom was a member of Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Tom loved to fish and looked forward to the trips to Maine and especially the annual trip to Ocean City with family and friends where he loved to sit in a chair and fish from the deck only to return home and follow up with a fish fry. Other hobbies include Tom’s love of hunting, gardening, playing the guitar on Thursday with Kevin and Kamal, music, dancing, holiday celebrations, cookouts, attending his high school reunions at Red Lobster, and spending time with family and friends. Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather who was loved by everyone and made an impact on everyone he encountered. Tom will be remembered for telling jokes, his knowledge of family history and being the life of the party. O0ne of his favorite quotes, “If I don’t see you through the week, I will see you through the window”. Tom always found simple words and scenarios to encourage you to pursue your dreams, he was a great man with great wisdom beyond his time.

Tom was proceeded in death by his loving wife Doretha and his offspring Eric, Juanita, and Teresa Garey.  Tom leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memories are his three children Beverly Miller, Thomas (Diane) Garey, Jr, and Patricia Smith (Lawrence) 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and two God sons Leroy Hyson and Eric Johnson. 

He is also survived by one sister Janet Dorsey (Marcus); four brothers Jack (Norma), Ronald, Donald, and William (Joan) Garey; 8 devoted sister in laws, 2 brother in laws, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. He was proceeded in death by one sister Hazel Lampkin and two brothers James Garey Sr. and Richard Garey, Sr.
