Mr. Wayne Anthony “Bird” McCall
Mr. Wayne Anthony McCall, son of the late Attorney John E. McCall and Nellie Mae “Tootsie” Talley McCall. was born on April 15th, 1958 in Cheraw, South Carolina. He departed this life on Sunday, June 30th, 2024 in Germantown, Maryland.
Mr. Wayne McCall completed his primary education in Cheraw; graduating from Cheraw High School where he was an avid lover of music, saxophonist in the local Cheraw Highschool Band, and known athlete excelling as a member of the Cheraw High School football and basketball teams; coined with the nickname “Bird” by his friends and peers for his athletic abilities.
Mr. McCall attended Morris College and South Carolina State University receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science where he developed a keen love and passion for social justice and serving his community for the betterment of all.
Pursing his passion, Mr. Wayne McCall served four years in the United States Air Force from 1981 to 1985, where during his service he was honored with the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal and the Air Force Achievement Medal.
Throughout his career, Mr. McCall served as Probation and Parole Officer under the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services servicing Chesterfield County, Marlboro County and Richland County South Carolina consecutively from 1990 to 1996. Mr. McCall has also served more than twenty-six years with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services Grant Administration Division; retired in 2024.
Mr. Wayne McCall holds a Master of Science Degree in Political Science. He was active in many civic, religious, fraternal and professional organizations at the local, federal and national level. He’s former President of Blacks in Government; member of the Cheraw Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and member of the Charles Datcher Masonic Lodge No. 15 of Washington, D.C.
Mr. McCall had a heart that drew in everyone he met. He was always full of laughter and smiles. He cherished his family and friends but was most proud of his children and their accomplishments.
Mr. Wayne Anthony McCall is survived by his son, Calvin Thomas of Germantown, MD, daughter, Kayla McCall of Atlanta, GA, grandson, Johnathan Paul Thomas of Germantown, MD, his sister Brenda Troutman of Cheraw, SC, best friend and lifetime partner, Deborah Houston McCall, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many devoted extended family and supportive friends.
