With deep sorrow and cherished memories, we announce the passing of William (Bill) Vernon Howard on August 21, 2025, in Potomac, Maryland. Bill passed away peacefully at home.
Born on November 13, 1956, to James Paul and Cleo Gee Howard, Bill lived a life defined by kindness, integrity, and unwavering devotion. Named in honor of his father’s oldest and youngest brothers, Vernon and William. Bill was the youngest of four children and a beloved brother to his sister, Pat, and brothers, James “Skip” and David.
Bill’s early years in Detroit were filled with close-knit friendships and family. When his family later moved to St. Louis, Missouri, he quickly formed new friendships. Upon returning to Michigan, he enrolled at Cass Tech, where he met his lifelong friend, Broderick Ward.
His circle of friendships continued to grow at Morehouse College, where he joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.. The brotherhood, a legacy he shared with his uncle, became an enduring source of pride and fellowship. Among his fraternity brothers, he built especially close bonds with Victor Reid, Lee Bethel — his college roommate — and Vasco “Smitty” Smith, with whom he spoke daily. His pursuit of knowledge later took him to Harvard University, where he earned his Master’s degree.
Beyond campus life, Bill also found joy in the camaraderie of his barbershop buddies, where laughter, spirited debates, and fellowship were as cherished as the haircuts themselves. A man of many passions, Bill was deeply moved by jazz and art, which fed his creativity and gave him joy throughout his life.
Bill embarked on another meaningful chapter of his life: meeting and marrying Lynn Major. To her parents, Frank and Sarah Major, he was not just a son-in-law but a second son, deeply loved by them both. Together, Bill and Lynn built a family, and from that union came his greatest joy: his daughters, Hallie Rose and Camille Patrice. A quintessential “girl dad,” Bill often said his heart expanded more than he thought possible to hold all the love he felt for them. He was a proud dance dad, beaming from the audience at recitals, and an active volunteer in Girl Scout Troop 3487, where his support and encouragement created lasting memories for the girls he mentored.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Lynn, and daughter, Hallie, who will carry forward his legacy of warmth and resilience. He was also the loving father of Camille, who preceded him in death, but whose spirit and memory remain forever treasured by all who loved her. Bill’s absence will also be felt by his faithful dog, Paxton, who rarely left his side.
A truly special man, Bill’s gentle spirit, generous heart, and gift for storytelling made him a steadfast presence in the lives of many. Whether offering a helping hand, sharing a funny story with quiet wit and a touch of snark, or speaking words of wisdom, he made those around him feel seen and valued. His memory will live on in the stories told, the laughter remembered, and the love that continues to bind his family and friends.
He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife and daughter, his devoted sister and brothers. Bill was also treasured by his extended family — including the Evans relatives, especially cousins Ruby and Al, their children Stevie, Marilyn, Shirley and Brenda. He loved his cherished cousins Gregory and Debbie, children of his uncle Lowry, as well as Debbie’s daughter, Robin, and Lynette and Michael Henley. He is also survived by his beloved Kamryn Lewis, who was like a daughter to him as was his goddaughter, Brittany Bethel. His many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and countless friends will forever remember his kindness.
Though he is no longer with us, Bill’s love, laughter, and wisdom will continue to light the path for those he touched.
