Bessie was born on August 29, 1926 and passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2018. Bessie was a resident of Silver Spring, Maryland.
Bessie came to Washington, DC in 1942, when she was 16 years old and stayed with her Grandfather, the late Henry Sutton. In her mid-twenties She met her husband Andrew Cox, Sr. As they journeyed through life they settled in a house at 729 Madison Street in upper NW, where they welcomed endless family members who were relocating to Washington DC until they were able to make a better way for themselves. Mother Bessie always insured that everyone had a place to lay their head and that no one was ever hungry. She worked tirelessly cleaning homes for others, and when she came home everything had to be in it place or else. A true believer that cleanliness was next to Godliness.
While raising three children of her own I didn’t realize it until looking back that she was the mother for what I would call our family village.
Affectionately known as “B”, she is survived by her loving husband Andrew Cox, Sr; daughter Gracie Gaddis; son Andrew Cox, Jr; ten grandchildren, Michael, Isaac, Timothy, Stephen, Matthew, Shami, Ashley, Andrew Cox lll, Egypt, Cheimrod; 19 great-grandchildren; brother James Sutton; sisters, Viola Jenkins, Essie Johnson (George); nieces and nephews; James, Jr., Mary Ann, Charlene, Marlow, Beverly, Sylvia, Lisa and Patrick; a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
She is joined with her daughter Loretta Cox and her brother Nick Sutton along with her sisters-in-law Barbara Sutton and Grace Cox.
