Katherine Gassaway Obituary

Katherine Lena Gassaway, daughter of the late James and  Blanche Gassaway, was born on April 15, 1923 in Silver Spring, MD. She was the sixth child of 18 children. Katherine attended Gamet Patterson Junior High School and  Armstrong Senior High School in the District of Columbia.

Katherine worked as a domestic worker and babysitter for a number of families in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. She attended both Mount Zion Methodist Church in Silver Spring, MD and Van Buren United Methodist Church in Washington, DC  in her free time, Katherine enjoyed singing. Her love for music landed her in number of local church choirs. She sang  with the Silver Spring Chanters, the Zionnaires, and the Van Buren  United Methodist Church choir. Katherine also led cooking and was known for her baked cakes. During the holiday she was known to bake at least 10 cakes for church family and family. In her later years, Katherine enjoyed  watching television cooking shows and I Love Lucy reruns. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends and  making everyone laugh with her songs and dances. Katherine helped raised a niece and nephew and was a second mom, godmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many more. She is survived by her sister, Geneva Gassaway; three sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and  friends.

" We had a wonderful aunt, One who never really grew old; Her smile was made of sunshine,   and her heart was solid gold." --Author Unknown
