Byron Gamaliel Jones, affectionately known as "Bon" was called home to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 5, 2020. He was born on May 24, 1954 to the late William and Byrdie Jones. He was the middle child of three siblings. He grew up in a loving Christian home and was a lifelong member of Queen’s Chapel UMC.
Byron was educated in the Prince George's County Public Schools, graduating from High Point High School. He attended Morgan State University, and then began an electrician apprenticeship with The University of Maryland, College Park. Upon completion of his apprenticeship, Byron was employed as an electrician by the University of Maryland Physical Plant. He was a faithful employee for more than 36 years, retiring from the University of Maryland on July 1, 2010.
On July 4, 1976, Byron and Yolanda Lanaux were blessed with a daughter, Tanya Jones. Tanya was his pride and joy, and he would do anything in the world for her . During retirement, Byron's highlight of the day was getting his grandson KJ on and off the school bus. He enjoyed their special time together. Byron always made sure he called his daughter daily, just to see how she was doing. Byron frequently showed he was a kindhearted man, as he enjoyed driving family and neighborhood friends to medical appointments or to get groceries. Byron loved his family and friends, he always made sure to call them on birthdays and special occasions. He was an avid University of Maryland sports fan and loved the Washington Redskins. He especially enjoyed meeting up with old friends from the University of Maryland to catch-up and talk about old times. If anyone in the neighborhood had an electrical problem or need, he would come fix the problem for free. On many occasions you could find Byron lending a helping hand at the local American Legion.
Byron was preceded in death by his loving mother, Byrdie Ross Jones and father, William Edward Jones. He leaves to cherish his loving memory: daughter, Tanya Jones-Austin (Keon); grandson, Keon Austin Jr. ; granddaughter, Keonna Austin; great grandchildren, Kingston Robinson and Alaina Anderson; brothers: William Jon es Jr., John Jones (Karen); nephew, Justin Jones; aunts: Willie Ross , Venita Jackson (Vern on), Anita Burton (Lawrence), Ruth Miller; god mother, Hazeline Ross; godchild, Joshua Warren; special friends: Jim Ross, Terry (Ernie) O'Hara, Mike Young, John Lee, Susan Wilson, Billy Kuhn, Ginger Sher man, Wayne Van Hassel, Phillip Hebron, Edward Franklin, Donald Smith, Rodell Gaither, Charles Dodson, Nathaniel Jones, Maurice Jones, James Jones Jr., Clarence America Jr., Julius Jones, Andre Frazier , Theda Young, William Hebron, Winston Cover and family and a host of relatives and friends.
The world , however beautiful, was never meant to be the place that ·we would call home for all eternity, And though we would not choose to leave, a loving God knows best, and in His time, He lifts us to a place of peace and rest, For He has built a mansion where His children will abide, Free from pain and sorrow, forever at His side.
Lovingly, The Family
