Evelyn Jackson Obituary

Evelyn Louise Jackson departed this life on Monday June 29, 2020 at her home in Silver Spring, Maryland.  She is the daughter of the late Emanuel Sr. and Georgie Thompson born on April 20, 1933.

She was educated in Montgomery County Public Schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951.  Prior to getting married Evelyn had a daughter Sondra Thompson-Taylor. On January 3, 1958 she and Henry Jackson were united in holy matrimony.  From this union three daughters were born Renee, Donna and Sheree Jackson.

She began working at Woodward & Lothrop (Woodies) in the gift-wrapping department where she retired after 30 years of service.  She then started working part-time with the Smithsonian Institute at the Air and Space Museum until she went home to be a caregiver to her husband.

Evelyn accepted Christ at an early age when she joined Jerusalem Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Rockville, Maryland.  When she moved to Washington, DC she attended First Rock Baptist Church with her family.  But she remained a member of Jerusalem Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church until her passing.

Evelyn loved to shop, travel and eat out.  She and her daughter Renee loved to order steak and cheese sandwiches for lunch.  Outback and Ruby Tuesdays were their favorite restaurants.  She was an amazing bowler and a member of the Fair Lanes Owls Bowling Club. The family’s annual vacation was to the Jazz Festival in Hampton, VA. For the last three months Renee moved in with Evelyn to help care for her until she passed. She enjoyed spending time with family.  One thing she loved was going grocery shopping and having lunch/dinner dates with her granddaughter. Anytime her granddaughter came to visit, her world would light up. Although Evelyn and Takeeta loved each other they fussed all the time.

Evelyn had a special bond with her niece Georgie.  In addition to shopping and eating out, they would visit her sister Helen and other family members. She loved going to Georgie’s house to see her great, great- great, and her great- great- great, nieces and nephews. Georgie would take her to Maryland Live Casino to play the slot machines.  Evelyn loved Gospel music and would attend Georgie’s church concerts regularly.  She was famous for saying with a smile, “I’m hanging with Georgie”.

She is preceded in death by her parents Emanuel & Georgie Thompson; husband Henry Jackson; three daughters Donna Jackson, Sheree Jackson, Sondra Taylor; four brothers William, Emanuel Jr, James, and Charles Thompson.

She leaves to mourn her great lost one devoted and loving daughter Renee Jackson; devoted granddaughter Takeeta Taylor; grandson Jamal Jones; loving sister Helen Jackson; devoted niece Georgie Mitchell-Thomas(Darrell); three great-grandsons Jamal Jr, Jabari, Jagger Jones; devoted cousin Charles Copeland (Yvonne); foster son Anthony Staten (Joyce); foster daughter Carol Bell; goddaughter Monae Bell; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
