Howard “Nitty” Francis Hill, Sr. son of the late James W. and Alice V. Hill was born on April 15, 1941 in Sandy Spring, MD. Nitty departed this life peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 2019 under the care of Montgomery Hospice’s “Casey House”.
He attended Sandy Spring School and began working at an early age. He worked for the Thomas family of Ashton and Sandy Spring Friends School. His career with Montgomery County Public Schools while working part time at Montgomery General Hospital spanned over 60 years.
He married the late Elsie V. Hill in 1964 and had four children: Christine Wilson, Howard Jr., Richard Sr., and Lia Bailey. He married Joann Davis on June 13, 1996 which added six children: Wesley, Elwood, Donna, Jessie, Gregory and Douglas.
Nitty enjoyed fishing, hunting, yard work, family gatherings, and hanging at 7-11 with the fellas. He enjoyed fellowshipping of his friends while attending Ross Boddy Neighborhood Center’s Senior Program. He has been worshiping at Mt. Calvary AUMP Church, Spencerville, MD. He was a founding member of Wheels of Thunder Motorcycle Club and a member of the Sandy Spring Civic Association. He enjoyed talking and laughing with everyone with his infectious and contagious laugh.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by six siblings, Charles, James, Richard, and Percy Hill, Theodore Sterling, and Denise Gregg. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife Joann Hill, four children; Christine (William), Howard Jr., Richard Sr. (Lanessa), and Lia (Phillip); 17 grandchildren: Jerika (Curtis), Richard Jr., Darrnell, Savannah, Courtney, Ayana, Sydney, Izaiah, Jasmine, Wayne, Tyler, Lindsey, Garrett, Kandace, Derrick and Rhianna. Three great grandchildren. Four sisters, Louise Darden, Laura Hill, Frances and Patricia Sterling, two brothers, Howard Clark (Lue) and Larry Holland (Joanna) and three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in law. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives; and friends.
