James William Stevenson Sr.

James Stevenson Sr. Obituary

James William Stevenson Sr. ascended to his heavenly home on Saturday, September 10, 2022. He was born on February 25, 1936 to the late Marion Dorsey and Earnest Stevenson. James was widely known to others by the names of Sonny, Moon, and Mooneye.

He received his education in the Montgomery County School System.

On April 16, 1960 he married Geraldine Hawkins. From this union were born, Selena Antonino, Kindra Marlena, James Jr., and Sondra Marie Stevenson. They shared a loving marriage for 62 years.

As a child, he attended Catholic catechism classes. As an adult, he reaffirmed his faith in God and joined Emory Grove United Methodist Church.

He truly enjoyed socializing with family, his church family, and friends. He was an active member of the United Methodist Men. He was a past member of the Elks - W. Bruce Evans Lodge #380 and the Tri-State Association of Maryland, Delaware and The District of Columbia of the I.B.P.O.E. of the World. He was also a member of the Cracker Jack Pack. Wherever there was a social event, there you would find James.

In 1980, he retired at the age of 55 from the City of Rockville, Public Works Department. He enjoyed his retirement to the fullest. He was an avid sportsman, playing golf, hunting, and fishing. In his younger years playing baseball and softball. He was an also a Dallas Cowboy fan. And, of course, he enjoyed a game of Bid Whist.

James leaves behind a loving and caring family; his wife Geraldine. Children; Selena, Kindra, James Jr. and Sondra. Grandchildren: Kapresha Burriss, Jamaal Curry, and Maya Stevenson. Great grandchildren: Zariah Jenrette, Keyara Jenrette, and Marcus Jenrette, II. Two sisters: Margrette (Mae) Nolan and Faye Hackey. Brother in-laws: Raymond Hawkins, Jr. and Kirk Canaday. Sister in-laws: Doretha Chambers Deas, Germaine McRae and Beverly Canaday. Honorary Grandson: John Anthony Battle. Special Cousins: Norman Mullens, Earnest Neal, and the Carey family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers (Herbert and Edwin Chambers), and sisters (Louise Stevenson and Bernice James).

He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
