Jean Brice Wright passed away peacefully in her home on April 19, 2019 at the age of 87. She was born on Dec 2, 1931 in Darby, PA, to the late Charles and Helen Brice. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Colonel James F. Wright, and her sister Margaret “Peggy” Arrendell. She was a devoted mother to Sandra (Gary) and James (Laura), a loving grandmother to Patrick (Ashley), Cameron and Declan and great-grandmother to Jade, James and Michael.
A voracious reader and insomniac, Jean had an overflowing library collection. She was an avid seamstress and was perpetually midstream in a range of creative endeavors from tailored clothing to custom quilts. Jean followed politics closely and was active in the civil rights movement for several decades. Beyond believing that each citizen should be given equal rights and opportunities, she was a strong proponent of self-empowerment and helped those around her to better themselves – beginning with her own family and extending far beyond. Jean had a particularly strong impact at RICA (Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents) where she worked for 23 years in a senior leadership role. Over the years, she mentored countless young people and coaxed them to grow and explore their potential. She was well-loved and will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, June 1 at 1:30pm at Epworth United Methodist Church at 9008 Rosemont Drive, Gaithersburg, MD. Jean will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. at a future date.
