Jerlene Snyder Chasten

Jerlene Catherine Snyder was born in Jamaica Queens/New York, New York on August 13, 1951.  She was the oldest child of the late Barbara Smith and Herbert W. Snyder, Sr.

Jerlene attended the New York City Public School System, and after graduating high school in May 1969, enrolled at Howard University, located in Washington, D.C. She earned both an Undergraduate & Graduate degree in Education. She taught English at the Secondary Level in the City’s Public Schools until her retirement in the spring of 2003.

Prior to her retirement, she was the Chair of the English Department at Alice Deal Junior High School, located in Northwest, Washington, D.C.

Jerlene met and married her husband, Castor D. Chasten on November 29, 1997.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Smith and brother, Herbert W. Snyder, Jr.

She is survived by her husband, Castor D. Chasten; adopted daughter/niece; Kimberly C. Snyder-Chasten; nephew, Donell D. Smith; sister-in-law, Tonga R. Williams; brothers-in-law, William B. Chasten and Rickie Chasten; mother-in-law, Virginia R. Chasten and an array of nieces and nephews.
