Joseph Wesley Doneghy, of Washington, DC, surrounded by earth angels, Marti, Noni and ReRe, departed this life, Sunday, August 11, 2019. Joe was born to Joseph Edward and Odessa Stallings Doneghy on September 19, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio. He attended the public schools of Toledo, OH, and graduated from J.W. Scott High School. Joe arrived in Washington, D.C. in 1959, to attend Howard University and graduated in 1963, with a B.S. in Sociology. At Howard University, he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Following graduation, Joe entered the United States Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy and retired with the rank of Lieutenant. During the Vietnam Conflict, he served as a Communications Watch Officer and served two tours aboard the USS Saratoga, Mediterranean Fleet.
Following his honorable discharge Joe worked for the District of Columbia government and the federal government. Notably, the majority of his 42 years of government service was with Health and Human Services and subsequently, the Social Security Administration headquarters, Woodlawn, MD.
His survivors are his wife and best friend, Marther (Marti) Thomas Doneghy; son, Martin Christopher Doneghy, Columbus OH; grandchildren, Joshua Emmanuel Doneghy and Annika Odessa Doneghy of Columbus, OH; two sisters, Norma D. Anderson, Washington, D.C. and Marie D. Medeck, Arnold, MD; niece, Candice Anderson, Brooklyn, NY; and two brother -in-laws, Dave Medeck, Arnold, MD and Jerrold L. Charles, Montgomery, AL.
