Born on August 7, 1935, to the late James and Ella Hill, Lillian Hill Allen was raised in Montgomery County, Maryland. She attended Lincoln Junior High School and went on to graduate in 1953 from Carver High School. Lillian, like her sisters, was known to be “light on her feet”. She enjoyed dancing and styling hair, but it was her passion to care for others, especially seniors. In 1982, the state of Maryland passed a law mandating that all nursing home assistants be instructed and certified in nursing care. Lillian and some 30 of her peers were the first graduate class of the program receiving over 60 hours of classroom and theoretical training to become certified nursing assistants (CNAs). She began her career at Greater Laurel Nursing Home working later at Friends Nursing Home where she would remain for over a decade. She retired from Friends and worked part time private duty in home healthcare.
A few short years after high school on January 18, 1959, she and her husband, Bernard Allen were married. She said that the night before their wedding that it snowed but that on her wedding day the sky opened, and her day was beautiful. Bernard and Lillian would go on to spend the next sixty-one years happily married. Their home was welcoming to everyone and everything. People would travel to their house for the best basement New Year’s Eve parties or just to sit in their yard and relax. Often time you would find Bernard on the porch with a cigar and Lillian talking to one of her many stray animals of various species. Her favorite was a cat she named, “Brownie”.
Although she was not the youngest of her nine siblings, she was the last to part this life. Lillian was undoubtedly favored with strength and wisdom that would enable her to provide care for everyone. She was preceded in death by her parents: James Hill and Ella Hill; her siblings: Robert (Dick) Hill, Sr., Lewis (Pudney) Hill, Anna (Mutt) Randall, Ella (Ellababy) Estep, Harold (Sam) Hill, Howard Hill, Mable Hill, William Hill, Elsie (Tita) Hill; and her husband Bernard Allen. Also preceded in death were her nieces Jean E. Lee, Mary E. Mason, Kathryn A. Griffin and nephew Carl Estep. She leaves to cherish her loving memories, those devoted to her care: her great-niece Keona Lee, her nephew Robert Hill, Jr. (Dyane), and great-nephew Cheivelle Hill (Lynette). Her memories live on in her nieces and nephews: Richard Estep, Jr., John (Jack) Hill, Juanita Hill, Beverly L. Anthony, Eugene Lee, and William Thorton; her great-nieces and nephews, cousins, her sisters-in-law: Bertha Harris and Nancy Lee, a wonderful church family and her very best friend, Doris Norman.
Her laugh was infectious, her voice distinct, her words enlightening, and her love limitless. The sun set on her beautiful spirit Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Gilchrist Hospice in Columbia, Maryland. Lillian will be missed.
